Beekse Bergen keeps white rhinos since many years, but now two male black rhinos have arrived from England.

It's too bad they will only be visible in the new Safari Resort, so won't be seen if you just visit the Safaripark you will have to stay at the holiday resort.

Some observations from my visit last weekend :
    - entrance area is under construction
    - first gorilla-island ( with "breeding group") under construction
    - Enclosure for Small-clawed otter completly gone - the otters are now together with the Sloth bears and Corsac foxes
    - new species in the new desert-area : Dromedary ( see Dromedary | ZooChat ) and Addax ( see Addax | ZooChat )
    - talked with a guide and he told me that the Black rhinos are indeed only visuable from the new Safari Resort but it still is not known if they later will become also visuable for the "normal"visitors.

The new entrance-area will be opened 1st of june. At the 'Kongo-side' of the park new construction began to create a walk-through exhibit where visitors will meet ringtailed lemurs, red ruffed lemurs and African /black-footed penguins.

Two Secretary Birds were born in Beekse Bergen. This is special because there are only 120 Secretary Birds in captivity worldwide (according to Beekse Bergen themselves)

Three grey crowned cranes (Balearica regulorum) have hatched at Safaripark Beekse Bergen recently. This was the 4th year in a row the birds nested, but the first time that any eggs hatched. It is still wait and see whether the chicks will make it though.

More good news from the Beekse Bergen.

Ostrich were hatched naturally in the Safaripark this year and are doing well being raised naturally. The past week more ostrich have hatched. The young ostrich are currently still kept behind the scenes - because of the natural hatching and raising the park is being extra-careful and letting them get bigger and stronger before releasing them into the car/bus safari, which they hope to be able to do later this year.

The female okapi calf born at Beekse Bergen on July 26th, named Zaïre (former name of the country now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo), has set her first steps into the outdoor enclosure earlier this week.

Some observations made last month on a visit to the park:
    - re-newed entrance looks good but the Gorilla-island still needs a little more green to look better.
    - at the other end of the park 2 big aviaries ( the one with scarlet ibis and waterfowl and the one with black and yellow-headed vultures have gone and the area is now one big walk-through enclosure for African penguins - will upload later some pictures of this area.

The old otter-enclosure is already unused for some time and now wotk has started to put it down and include it in one of the okapi-enclosures which will become ways bigger in this way !
