While we're bummed about our penguin pals moving off public view for a couple of years, we're pretty excited about finally breaking ground for polar bears. The train tracks have already been moved in that area. Good stuff ahead!
I'm going to the zoo next week. Does anyone know if the tuatara is still at the zoo and if it's on display? I saw it 10 years ago there but don't have a picture of it.
I visited the St. Louis Zoo a little over a month ago. On my visit, the tuatara exhibit was being renovated, so the reptiles weren't out on display. I assume the renovation is done now, and the tuataras are back on display, but don't know for sure.
Bert moved to Daisy the sloth bear's old exhibit; Daisy is off-exhibit (presumably going to a new zoo home soon); and the Andean bears are off-exhibit until they get into their new digs in River's Edge.
Went to the zoo today. Here are a couple points of interest I thought people would want to know: I was told by the worker at the entrance to the penguin exhibit that no official day for closing it to the public has been decided but they are looking at the Tuesday after Labor Day. Progress on the new exhibits for Sun Bear, Andean Bear and Painted Dogs are coming along well. They are going to be nice. The grizzly and sun bears were still on exhibit. The tuatara is back on exhibit. The new jaguar was out today. Nothing else out of the usual, the baby okapi was cute though!
Heres an article on the potential future of polar bears. When St. Louis Zoo builds it, will polar bears come? : News
We know Polar Bears are in limited supply. If they build this 7,000 square foot (small, no?) exhibit will they get bears? Maybe. I was surprised to hear it will be that small. I understand they are reworking that area and space is limited, but why spend millions of dollars for such a small exhibit?
The article mentions US zoos canĀ“t import polar bears from outside any longer (including those beeing captive bred from european or canadian zoos if I understand it correctly). Is it really so? Because it makes little sense to me.
Does anybody know if the hyacinth are the same pair they had forty years ago? And whether or not they've bred?

As an update, we're about 95% done with all the new habitats in River's Edge. Still slated for a spring opening. Meanwhile, we're digging right in on Polar Bear Point!
