In terms of both its animal collection and quality of exhibits I personally believe that Saint Louis is a strong candidate for being America's #1 zoo. It is right up there with San Diego, Omaha, Bronx and Columbus but has perhaps undergone more major changes than any of the other establishments in recent years and has almost zero flaws.

If you click on the link and then scroll down it will reveal the large number of completed exhibits and upcoming projects:

    The Living Promise

It is incredible to think that Saint Louis Zoo has already purchased 13.5 acres of land and at some point there will be an expansion to this already top-notch facility.

I am planning on visiting St. Louis soon but wanted to wait until the new installments for Rivers Edge opened. Does anyone know a date for the new African Wild Dog and bears exhibits? I was there in August and the exhibits were coming right along. One of the workers told us they were going to open in the spring.

Uni management + student callous and ill-advised. Veterinary Service overzealous to the point of being incompetent (assuming worst case scenario, ordering a euthanasia on a completely healthy bear cub and at the 13th hour diagnosing no rabies in a bear cub). Now is this stupidity having met ignorance and incompetence at the same venue or what?

Glad the zoo had more sense … (not surprising as their in situ conservation work is world class)

The fleetingly mentioned gazelles on Red Rock either are Speke's, Cuvier's or Dama.

Yes, we do. They're on the outer side of Red Rocks.

Speke's. They're currently next to the giraffes. :)

Reminder: the three new exhibits in River's Edge - Sun Bear Forest, Painted Dog Preserve, and Andean Bear Range - open to the public this Saturday! The zoo has also moved to summer hours, so you can see them starting at 8 am. Can't wait for everyone to come enjoy!

Thanks for sharing! I visited the Saint Louis Zoo in May of 2013 when these exhibits were in the midst of construction. From the looks of it they turned out fantastic, and I would love to go back to my favorite zoo to check them out. I must add River's Edge is my favorite zoo exhibit of all the exhibits I have seen, as the exhibitry is excellent and the viewing opportunities for visitors are equally great.
