This is quite good news, I heard from the LA’s Zoo vision plan that for their Australia/Islands Region they plan to have Quokkas soon possibly the first Zoo in the U.S. to have them.

Given that only one zoo outside Australia has them, then no they are not equally as rare in Australian zoos.

In Australia there are over a dozen zoos which hold them, with something like 70-odd animals between them.

Saitama children's zoo received plains viscacha from Zoo Delle Maitine. This is the first time viscachas have been in japan since 2003. They were initially planned to be exhibited with the opening of the small mammal house but due to complications they came a bit later than desired.

It is nice to see the zoo ties developing over Continents (Italy to Japan import)!

SCZ is making good use of that WAZA membership. I doubt they will share the animals though.

Can you elaborate what you mean by this?

Interesting to learn about the new giraffe development. How will these improvements change the overall layout of the zoo? What about the general atmosphere and flow of exhibits now?

It’s just that I never found out any other Japanese zoo getting the pudus once they have grown up.

The new giraffe barn is going to be like a green house and will be large enough to be an indoor exhibit in the winter.

here is the park’s map. The park isn’t jam packed. The animals aren’t placed on taxonomic nor zoo geographic themes ( the Australia area gets contradicted by sloths.) except for the deer and serrow

The male Zel (short for Zelkova, a tree from Prefecture Saitama) was born on May 13 in 2020. Parents not named. He was part of the pair sent to Kobe Animal Kingdom this June.

FYI: another pudu would have been born in July 2020 too as the newspaper article cites they can now compare calf development. Possibly born July 16, 2020.

Using this website I tried to make a family tree. I did not include birth and death dates. I also referred Zel as Mel because I forgot. Basically Rei is paired with her uncle. One of the founder females (Pina) and her only 1.0 spawn (lapis) are dead. In an ideal world, lapis and Sakura are paired, or the zoo is just able to get an animal from Europe.
