Doesn't look like anybody has done a species list for my local zoo, so after a visit this afternoon, I have compiled a comprehensive list of species on display at the San Antonio Zoo as of December 14th, 2021. It was a very productive day, with very few no shows, and a number of new species on display that I have not seen here before. Exhibits/areas will be in bold. No shows will be in italics. Amazing second post! I do have one question, you list Northern cassowary, but these are extremely rare in North America. Is this an error for Southern Cassowary, or are they signed as Northern?
It was incredibly helpful actually, as San Antonio was one of the few major zoos we did not have an complete, accurate species list for. Thank you for the update, and likewise welcome to the forum!
Quick update to my San Antonio species list from yesterday, fixed a couple mistakes and added a couple species present in multiple areas. This is an extremely impressive and detailed list! Thank you for taking the time to write down such good notes and sharing them on this forum! The San Antonio Zoo is one of my favorites because they've maintained such a broad and high-quality collection of birds and reptiles over the years, and they've managed to do this while retaining some of their hoofstock collection - all of it in a relatively small area! I think they have great exhibits and a great use of space. It's an 8-hour drive for me, so I only get to San Antonio about once a decade, and it seems like they've retained most of the species that I remember from my last visit in July of 2013. The only notable species missing (from my perspective) are Peruvian Pigeon, White-crowned Pigeon, and Red-flanked Duiker. Does anyone know if they still maintain and breed these? It's possible that these were pulled inside for the winter. I think they also had a pair of Wattled Cranes, but I might be wrong. I believe that the Greater Vasa Parrots, Great Blue Turacos, Raggiana Bird-of-Paradise, Blue-headed Dove, and Gold-crested Mynahs are new since my last visit, but it's such a large bird collection that I might have missed them. I'm happy to see that they still have Sitatunga - I see those less and less (as is the case with most African antelopes unfortunately). Thank you again - your list made my day!
I had a chance to visit the zoo again today after the renovation of the Hixon Bird House, so I'll update the species list a bit as there have been a few new additions there and at the reptile house. First, in the Hixon Bird House, I saw three new species since my last visit, all lifers for me, those being: African silverbill (Euodice cantans) African pygmy falcon (Polihierax semitorquatus) Hooded pitta (Pitta sordida) In the reptile house, within the past few months they have added: Black-tailed horned pitviper (Mixcoatlus melanurus) Grand Cayman blue iguana (Cyclura lewisi) Guatemalan beaded lizard (Heloderma charlesbogerti)
Update time once again! Two new species in Amphibia this time, those being: Green salamander (Aneides aeneus) Purple harlequin toad (Atelopus barbotini)
Neither did I! I also noticed quite a bit of updated signage throughout the zoo, mainly in the aquarium and bird exhibits, so I'm guessing they only arrived in the past couple days
All signage was removed in the aquarium on Sunday, so I imagine that was the case. Was sorely needed though in the aquarium, the signage is horribly outdated.
A few new species are now on display at the zoo as of September 16th. In Neotropica, there are a couple new bird species, those being: Great curassow (Crax rubra) Red-breasted toucan (Ramphastos dicolorus) At the new Discovery PLAYce, radiated tortoises (Astrochelys radiata) have been added, and finally, in Africa Live!, a carpet chameleon (Furcifer lateralis) has been added
Here's a list of all the butterfly species I was able to ID in the new butterfly house: Whitened bluewing (Myscelia cyaniris) Mexican bluewing (Myscelia ethusa) Rice paper butterfly (Idea leuconoe) Common tiger glassywing (Tithorea harmonia) Black-and-white Helen (Papilio nephelus) Red postman (Heliconius erato) Brown clipper (Parthenos sylvia philippensis) Postman (Heliconius melpomene) Great mormon (Papilio memnon) Great yellow mormon (Papilio lowii) Thoas swallowtail (Heraclides thoas) Blue clipper (Parthenos sylvia) Banded peacock swallowtail (Papilio crino) Dusky owl-butterfly (Caligo illioneus) Tiger longwing (Heliconius hecale) Leopard lacewing (Cethosia cyane) Gray cracker (Hamadryas februa) Scarlet mormon (Papilio rumanzovia) Polydamas swallowtail (Battus polydamas) Red rim (Biblis hyperia) False zebra longwing (Heliconius atthis) Magnificent owl-butterfly (Caligo atreus) Forest giant owl-butterfly (Caligo eurilochus) Eastern giant swallowtail (Heraclides cresphontes) African moon moth (Argema mimosae) Pale owl-butterfly (Caligo telamonius) Common morpho (Morpho helenor) Giant charaxes (Charaxes castor) Blue-spotted charaxes (Charaxes cithaeron) Costa Rican glasswing (Greta morgane) Julia longwing (Dryas iulia) Great eggfly (Hypolimnas bolina) Isabella tiger (Eueides isabella) Green-banded swallowtail (Papilio nireus) Mocker swallowtail (Papilio dardarnus) Numata longwing (Heliconius numata) Malachite (Siproeta stelenes) Painted lady (Vanessa cardui) Rusty-tipped page (Siproeta epaphus)
