The female calf is named "Sundari" -- Bengali for "beauty". She was born on Nov. 11, 2008 to dam Shanti. This is the 57th calf born at the Park. There are now 12 Indian rhinos in the Park's Asian Plains.
That's great news, Shanti is the most valuable of all San Diego's Indian Rhinos. She was wild caught - thus a founder...while the rest of San Diego's females are a result of much overbreeding. Do you know is Arun is still the breeding male and the sire of Sundari?
Arun is the sire. Bhopu the new male hasn't been at the Wild Animal Park long enough to have sired this calf. Not yet!
I was just at the Animal Park yesterday, and there's a new cheetah cub in the nursery, born on the 18th, and they are on pregnancy watch up at the elephants.
Wild Animal Park welcomes baby elephant I posted this on the North American Elephants thread also, but today a baby elephant was born at the San Diego Wild Animal Park.
San Diego Zoo.org Explains some of the zoos elephant plans, and Elephant Odyssesy is scheduled to open May 23rd, should be a fantastic new exhibit
So, when is Ndula due and do they know that she is pregnant for sure. Its weird that they did'nt really make an announcement about the upcoming babies on there website?
When I talked to one of the keepers last Feb. he told me they didn't want to announce any of the pregnancy in case anything happened. That would give the zoo bad press.
Another baby is great news for the Wild Animal Park, and with 12 elephants there is now quite the impressive herd there. Nothing provides better enrichment for elephants than other elephants, and once the Asians move into their new 2.5 acre exhibit at the zoo the Africans will have a 5 acre enclosure that will be close to the best of its kind in North America.
I actually think when they combine the yards it will be closer to 6 acres. The current African one is 3 acres, and the Asian one is around 2.5 plus the Asian yard has lots of sub yards behind it that aren't visible to the average visitor, so all together it will be closer to 6. I think with another baby on the way, 13 elephants in a nearly 6 acre exhibit will be unbeatable.
I am just updating my bonobo database and came up agains an inconsistency between my old database and the current bonobo population at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. I would be very grateful if someone could grant me a request to count the bonobos at the WAP or to find out the names of the current population. Thank you very much. Kind regards from Germany Bjoern
The WAP does not have Bonobos anymore. At least ones that are on display, however they may have some off display.
Are the Vaal Rheboks on exhibit and if yes, how many of them and in which enclosure, maybe in the south africa field exhibit ?
As far as I know the bonobos are still there. Their exhibit was along the old WGASA route near where it passes heart of africa. The new tour does not pass that exhibit. They mentioned in a Zoonooz article last year that they will eventually have a walking trail that takes you within view of the bonobo exhibit.
