Magpies have been in the area since the end of the last ice age similar to the condors. So not necessarily all animals are representing an extinct animal rather the animals are representing what the area was like back then.

 

What an excellent topic and what a species list this zoo has.

NY or SD next year, difficult question.

 

I am not sure if the Elephant exhibit is rotational or not, though I don't think that it is. The Pronghorn Antelopes are of the Peninsular variety. I don't think that Elephant Odyssey had Bison.

 

To start off 2019, I went to this zoo, and found several exhibits that I hadn't listed before, or had changed.

I did not see you list the Birds of Prey aviaries. Is this at the beginning of the Elephant Odyssey?

On page 2 of this thread, I list three waterfowl exhibits in the section titled Panda Canyon. The Birds of Prey aviaries are located across from them in the zoo, so technically, not at the beginning of Elephant Odyssey, more like at the beginning of Northern Frontier.
Also, if you were wondering, the species held in the aviaries are the following:

• Steller's Sea Eagle
• Ornate Hawk Eagle
• Harpy Eagle
• Andean Condor

Anteaterman, can I ask about those Canadian Lynx? If they are across from the Fennec Fox, what area would that be? Panda Canyon or Northern Frontier?

 

They were in the Children's zoo, which is now closed. It is being completely redesigned and is set to open in 2021.

 

In fairness, that site is inaccurate. I was thumbing through it last night for unrelated reasons and it still claims they have African Forest Buffalo Helen, who died several years back. It also mentions Africa Rocks as a future opening in at least one entry. It is not reflective of what is in their actual collection.

 

Whelp, that takes one reason away for going to SDZ ...

 

Never fear. There are plenty of reasons to go to SDZ.

 

I know, but now there is one less reason. I'm still going in June, but I really want a picture of a Congo Buffalo. Are there any others in captivity?

 

A fair few, just not many (any?) in the USA...

 

You lucky bas...I wish I could live in Europe!

 

There might be one small safari park somewhere between Tampa and Orlando with a couple, but after that there are (I think) some in private hands. I know an import from Berlin into the US was blocked by the government a few years ago.

Just go visit and talk some European ZooChatters into hauling you around the continent

Why was it blocked?

 

Because the government very rarely allows ruminant ungulates allowed into the US nowadays. They're overly concerned about the spread of disease into the food supply. This is one of the biggest problems facing the future of even-toed ungulates in US zoos.
