News from San Francisco while I am british, I do follow the zoo on Instagram where they have confirmed they have a new bird species: The bali starling (Bali mynah) . The post states there are two which are a part of the SSP.
Construction for the first phase of the chimp exhibit expansion is well underway. The keepers I talked to think it'll open sometime in the late summer or early fall. Also, the Primate discovery center is undergoing major renovations to the Langur, Siamng, howler, squirrel and colobus monkey exhibits
I haven't been back to the zoo since the wolves went on exhibit, but this might get me to stop in and check on their progress; the PDC is number two on my list of necessary overhauls.
"Elly," previously the oldest Eastern black rhino in the country, has died. San Francisco Zoo Mourns Passing Of 46-Year-Old Black Rhino 'Elly'
You mean the closed building? And why would they necessarily go in a nocturnal hall? They're cathemeral, and I have seen many active in outdoor exhibits.
The male Black Rhino was brought in several years ago for the purpose of eventually breeding. The Zoo is already in the process of acquiring a female. Also, expect to see Black Bears in the polar bear grotto in the near future!
I really glad SF Zoo after all this time is intending to reinvigorate their black rhino breeding of old. Nice to see some new additions like fossa and black bears (polar bears on way out???).
I was talking to a zoo docent yesterday, and she mentioned that the gorilla exhibit is undergoing a renovation where they will having an up close feeding station for the employees. Do not know if this is valid but I think that would be pretty interesting to see.
The docent might be confusing the Gorillas with the chimps. The Chimp exhibit expansion is underway and the indoor play area will allow guests to get much more up close with the chimps
I visited the zoo today and I will post a lengthy recap of my visit in the thread Snowleopard's 2017 Road Trip, including a species list for the special "Tarantulas" exhibit. I also uploaded almost 100 photos into the gallery.
Lots of new stuff at SF zoo as of November. The zoo is buildling a new Komodo Dragon exhibit next to the wolverine and Indian Rhino Exhibit. It'll be capable of housing as many as 4 adult dragons when complete, to allow for breeding. It's going to be a mixture of indoor and outdoor space. I'll post pics of it on the media page The Zoo is acquiring a pair of snow leopards with the intention of breeding them. The older female that the zoo has will retire up to the feline conservation center. The Chimp habitat expansion is probably 50% complete. I'm told the indoor portion is almost done, so it's just the overhead walkway and new outdoor yard that need to be completed. The chimps will have access to it by the beginning of 2018. The zoo is also going to be bringing in a new chimp, a male, around that time. The zoo is sending it's male Koala Austin, back to the San Diego Zoo, and getting a new male with a breeding recommendation. Fossas should be on exhibit before the end of the year as well. Keepers seem unsure as to whether they're going to be in the nocturnal gallery space, or a netted enclosure at lemur forest
