On July 15, 1953 the zoo received 0.1 Asian Elephant "Hanako" and on June 20, 1961 0.1 Asian Elephant "Lili". On Nov. 30, 1966 the big animal house "Tropical Animal Mansion" was opened. Elephants, hippos, giraffes, zebras, eland antelopes, tapirs, Great Apes, lions, tigers, leopards and Clouded leopards lived in this house with its outside facilities.

After the death of elephant "Hanako" in January 2007, it was decided to build new facilities for giraffes, hippos and predators. After their opening, the old "Tropical Animal Mansion" could be demolished in 2017 and space created for a new elephant house.

On Sept. 20, 2018 the new elephant house was opened - it is considered one of the largest and most modern in a Japanese zoo. After long negotiations with the government of Myanmar, 1.3 Asian elephants arrived in Sapporo on Nov. 11, 2018:
    1.0 Seisha (10 Years old)
    0.1 "Pearl" (15 years)
    0.1 "Sting" (27 years) and
    0.1 "Nyain" (5 years old)

It is to be hoped that the zoo can report an elephant birth in the next few years.
