I just uploaded approximately 50 photos of this tiny Illinois zoo into the gallery.

Looks quite good for such a small zoo and seems to be focusing on a diverse number of mostly smaller species to make up for that, which is a good strategy in my opinion. Might give it a look next summer or on a break from classes.

How long has the zoo had Cheetahs? They're quite an exotic species compared to the rest of the selection.

Uploaded more photos from a trip this month. Not sure where the cheetahs came from, but they have a very nice enclosure at Scovill; better than at some larger zoos, I'm sure. Other interesting species of note are tufted deer and African house snake.

Couple of other notes: a new enclosure is being built adjacent to the tufted deer and will hold African crowned cranes; the toucans and turacos were off-exhibit due to the recent threat of avian influenza, but I was told they would be back out soon; a ring-tailed lemur was born recently; and the prairie dogs have been jumping the concrete barrier into the meerkat enclosure, presumably to steal vegetation for their burrows.

Some information on their resident pair of Galapagos tortoise:
Turtles & Tortoises - Scovill Zoo

Both have known approximate birth dates in the late 1960's / early 1970's which leads me to believe they both were captive born! Question is where: Bermuda, San Diego or Honolulu? Anyone care to have more details?

A Black-handed spider monkey has been born:

Spider monkey born at Scovill Zoo

Mother Ethel gave birth on Wednesday, Jan. 13.

Ethel (age 17) was born at the Henson Robinson Zoo in Springfield and came to Scovill Zoo in 2008. Willie (age 24), the father, was born at Henry Doorly Zoo, Omaha, Nebraska, went to the Santa Anna Zoo in California before coming to Scovill Zoo in 2012.

This is the first baby for this spider monkey pair and the first spider monkey born at Scovill Zoo.
