I am an adorable sea creature with white fur and a runny black nose. I dislike people who go clubbing. But I do like animals, the science of looking after them, zoo history, zoo architecture and enclosure design. My favourite exhibits are tropical halls, a concept I implemented on a smaller scale. My own preference is for more specialist collections such as bird gardens with smaller, less often seen species. Zoos seen lately: Chester, Gauntlet, Jersey. Koln, Arnhem, Avifauna, Rotterdam, Amsterdam. All of them excellent though neither Jersey nor Arnhem quite lived up to the hype. Oddly the most memorable things about Jersey were a well designed reptile house and a well planted Asian aviary near the entrance. Whilst at Arnhem the spacious outdoors Safari stood out far more than the empty Bush. The Desert was also much better as exhibits go even if the rocks looked a bit too themeparky and artificial. Jersey nowadays would be a good but standard zoo of its size in the mainland UK because its approach became axiomatic there. Berger's Bush on the other hand was overambitious and I couldn't help be disappointed I didn't see many birds.
A warm welcome to ZooChat as I'm very fond of seal pups (see Media for a few of my photos from Donna Nook). Hereabouts PL tends to mean Port Lympne, so should we deduce that you're an inmate?
