Sunny the sea lion pup died. This is the Zoo's third sea lion death in 2016, as apparently a male, Boomerang, also died back in October. 3rd sea lion in 4 months dies at Seneca Park Zoo
The Zoo's 100th (wow!) African penguin chick hatched, and has been named Ikhulu. Seneca Park Zoo announces 100th African penguin birth
Article on expansion plans. It talks about rhinos getting a new habitat and giraffes, zebras, lemurs and red pandas being brought to the zoo. However it does not mention gorillas, which were prominently talked about in the master plan. Does anyone know if they are still slated to come? http://www.democratandchronicle.com...eneca-park-zoo-expansion-works-2017/97942032/
A hopeful outlook for the immediate future for the zoo. I believe the zoo sent out a male white rhino not too long ago (2014) to the Wilds. His younger brother stayed behind at the Seneca Park location. I would expect the new exhibit to be able to showcase a breeding group.
I actually hope it wasn't an error and they don't include gorillas. Knowing the space of the main building and the space around it, I don't think it's enough room for an outdoor exhibit for orangutan, lemur, and gorilla. Unless they want to save the gorillas from the Buffalo Zoo. ;-) Also, @kiraru bwana is correct about the white rhinos. Roscoe moved to the Wilds and the zoo still has Bill. Since he is in the main building, they need to build his new exhibit first so he can be relocated.
The first phase of the renovations has began! http://rbj.net/2017/07/18/officials-break-ground-on-seneca-park-zoo-renovation/
Two female sea lions, Daley and Mary Lou, arrived from SeaWorld Orlando and are on display. 2 young sea lions debut at Seneca Park Zoo
The Seneca Park zoo has created a page on their website called Wilder Vision that details the first phase of the master plan. Some exciting news from the page is that not only is the zoo getting giraffes, zebras and a new home for their Rhino Bill, but they are going to have naked mole-rats and elephant shrews!! http://senecaparkzoo.org/wilder-vision/
Also this year, Cold Asia will be completed and the zoo will have a new home for their snow leopards and also be getting a new species; red pandas. The outdated main building will also be demolished this year. In its place, in a few years, will be exhibits for orangutan, gorilla, and ring tailed lemur. This was my local zoo growing up so I am thrilled of all the changes they are making to enhance the lives of their animals.
For reading purposes: Another Masterplan document. Not sure if it has been shared or not, so put it up now: https://www2.monroecounty.gov/files...k Zoo Draft Master Plan Report - high res.pdf
Alan, an illegally owned American alligator, has arrived. He is a temporary resident until a permanent home is found for him. https://www.democratandchronicle.co...24/how-alan-big-alligator-got-zoo/1061331001/
The first new species for Animals of the Savannah has arrived, Rock Hyrax. They will be on display in the main building until their permanent home is built. https://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/news/2018/02/16/seneca-park-zoo-rock-hyrax/344462002/
The orangutans might be going to Miami unless there has been changes since the breeding/transfer plan.
Female polar bear dies at Seneca Park Zoo I believe the US population of polar bears is down to 44 individuals now. :-(
The article and all other ones that I've checked says that the zoo's looking to bring polar bears back in the future. With the zoo population so low now, it will be a while before another bear is brought yes?
