It's interesting to see how many zoos, science centers and other family-friendly attractions are building playgrounds that are nature-based. I've seen a few of them where the area is literally made up of logs, rocks, huge boulders and sometimes a tiny stream trickling through the middle. The trend is a welcome one because it allows kids to explore without any clear instructions...they can discover things as if they were in the wild. :p

This is yet another example of the devotion zoos have for their elephants. Short of IRAP--which stopped being effective for NZP's Shanthi--they seem to have stopped at nothing to care for Genny C. She and others like her have no need for 100s of acres of habitat, the only difference between a zoo and sanctuary. Activists have no argument here, so let's hope they continue to realize that and leave Genny C, Lilac, and Moki alone. Seneca Park is doing right by them.

It's also very smart on the zoos part to inform the public on the condition of the elephants to let them know if something will/could happen. This way the blowback that they receive from the activists isn't as severe as it would be if they didn't let the public know, and by doing this the local community, the strongest ally a zoo can have, is aware and on their side.

Yes, it is. NZP just released similar alerts about its 5 elderly residents:

As the National Zoo's 'queen' and other elephants age, keepers make plan to deal with death

The zoos renovated its snowy owl exhibit (it’s now enclosed) and has brought in a new male from the National Aviary.

The zoo posted on Facebook that white rhino Bill is going to Riverbanks Zoo in the coming months to mate with the females there, two new young males will be brought from separate zoos.
