Sentosa's Butterfly Park and Insect Kingdom attraction announced on its website that it will close for good on 6th July, after operating for almost 4 decades. While it has in recent years been in slow decline, falling attendance and aging infrastructure, the COVID pandemic did it in by keeping tourists away for the past one and half years. There are still 3 other butterfly attractions in Singapore - at Changi Airport's transit area (temporarily closed due to the lack of passengers), at the Singapore Science Centre (managed by the same company that ran the Sentosa Butterfly Park) and at the Singapore Zoo's Fragile Forest exhibit. Fun fact: Some years ago, the Butterfly Park and Insect Kingdom tried to reposition itself as a mini tropical zoo named Jungle Sentosa; its official website address bears that name. The plan was to exhibit birds like parrots and toucans, callitrichids, reptiles and amphibians, alongside the butterflies. The plan never materialized (i'm not sure why), but remnants of that attempt can be seen in the current displays of parrots, green iguanas and tortoises at the attraction. Not really, for the simple reason that there are no features or species that are unique to the butterfly park.
Definitely not. Place was horrendous. And lots of anecdotes from former keepers citing multiple cases of animal abuse and animal welfare concerns. It's definitely for the better that this place was shut down, from what I heard all the animals are being made to transfer to a zoo in Taiwan (not exactly sure where). Now all that's left is for the Live Turtle Museum (another establishment where former and current employees and volunteers have mentioned lapses in animal welfare and many negative things about the owner) to go down the same route.
