As promised, here is September's Photo Quiz, based on identifying tongues, but with an added twist explained below. Click on the image above to see the full size version.

First of all try to name the nine species that these tongues belong to. You just need the common English names, don't worry about subspecies or varieties. I think all the right names are used on Zootierliste. I think that some of the animals are easy to identify, but others are quite tricky.

Hidden in the correct names is a target word or phrase which should be significant to ZooChatters. I got the idea from Only Connect (the only TV quiz I enjoy): in the final round the teams have to identify words or phrases from which all spaces, hyphens and vowels have been removed.

Your answer to the quiz should be the nine names in the given order, all written in lower case except for the first consonant in the last word of the name, which should be a capital letter. Plus the target word or phrase constructed from the sequence of these consonants.

For example if I had chosen EGRET as the target word, removing the vowels produces GRT, so I might provide photographs of
    1 utila spinytail iGuana
    2 Ratel
    3 diamondback Terrapin
Then you could work backwards from these names to find the target, provided that you recognised the animals and realised that although a Ratel can also be called a honey Badger, GBT cannot be made into a sensible answer no matter how many vowels you add.

I should add that for the purposes of this quiz, the letter Y is another vowel and will have been removed (if it was there in the first place). The reason is that I have no suitable photos of a yak or a yuhina, and I have never even seen a yapok. I don't think I have any photos of the tongues of fishes or amphibians either, so we can ignore those species this time round. Neither have I included a photo of an aye-aye, as that poor creature has no consonants at all in its name.

In proper school teacher fashion I will mark each set of answers out of 20. 1 for each correctly identified animal, 1 for each correct consonant (so honey badger gets 1 mark in the example above and ratel gets 2). Plus 2 marks for getting the right target. But I am not going to reveal the answers until the quiz is over, because that might be too easy.

As usual, the winner will be the first person to score 20/20, but I will also award gold stars to the first person to hit the target and to anyone who gets an outstandingly high score.

    Happy quizzing :)

18/20 plus for getting the target right. Well done.
You still have a couple of errors in the exact species shown.
