Hello to everyone. I've been very interested in all four of the Singapore wildlife parks (Jurong bird park, River and Night safari, and the zoo) and I would like to work out a species list of all of them. Does anyone have the whole list?

Thanks @BucerosKeeper for the very extensive list. I had thought that some of the species on there are no longer in WRS' collection, like the emerald boa, oriental whip snake, Cantor's soft shelled turtle, tegu, draco. While some others are missing from the list, like Chinese crocodile lizard, sailfin lizard, mugger crocodile, bicoloured poison dart frog (all supposedly off show).

The Blue Tegu is a new addition as a result of a recent confiscation, the previous Red and Black-and-white Tegus have both passed due to ailments as a result of old age. Keepers are currently training it to be an ambassador animal, most likely to star in the Reptopia Behind-the-Scenes (BTS) programme.

Sailfin Dragon, Mugger Crocodile and Bicolor Poison Frog are no longer in the collection. The exhibit in River Safari now containing Eurasian Spoonbill and other water birds was initially planned to house Batagur affinis as well as Hydrosaurus. Bicolor Poison Frogs unfortunately fell prey to the Botriechis (hence why they have been taken off display.)

I am unsure about the status of the Chinese Crocodile Lizard in the collection plan as I did not see them while I worked there, I shall ask my ex-colleagues to confirm.

Do you know what happen to the muggers? Did they left to another zoo (if so: which one) or did they die?

Interesting. Thanks for the updates. It would seem then that herpetology section is quite sloppy with record keeping as the data doesn't tally..

Sorry, unfortunately I am not sure. And the people I asked are unsure too, perhaps the keepers that worked with the old herp team would know.

Unfortunately it is an issue that runs rampant throughout the parks. As animals are constantly moving in and out, the amount of paperwork just keeps stacking on. Hopefully things can be more or less cleared up during this period as the keepers will have lesser duties to fulfil now that there are no guests to tend to and that any import/export is frozen for the time being.

Missed a couple of species from the list yet again, they are

    Herptiles
    - Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)

    - American Green Tree Frog (Hyla cinerea)

    - Chinese Water Dragon (Physignathis cocincinus) Hate myself for forgetting them as I worked with them very closely!

    - Arrau River Turtle (Podocnemis expansa)

    Invertebrates
    - Giant African Land Snail (Achatina fulica)

    - Singapore Green Tree Snail (Amphidromous atricallosus temasek)

    - Star Dyakia (Dyakia striata)

    - Common Pond Skater (Gerris lacustris)

    - Singapore Freshwater Crab (Johora singaporensis)

    - Coconut Crab (Birgus latro)

There are also a LOT of Tarantula species and some scorpions that came in recently due to a huge bust at immigrations, I shall update them here once I get confirmation on what species are in the collection (all off-show however can probably be seen if you apply for the Fragile Forest BTS tour).

As for other species residing in the Mandai Parks, to my knowledge these are what currently reside there. This list is made up of animals I have seen/worked with as well as names given to me by staff I asked. All I can say is there are a treasure trove of species not shown to the public. So chances are there are animals here you may not have seen in the parks or have been told to have been exported/deceased. As from what I can assume, WRS loves to keep some of their animals hidden from the public. Also, as an added bonus, I have tried to list out the possible subspecies in the collection that I can, not all of them are known, so I apologise in advance if I am unable to list them out/get the subspecies wrong. If I have missed out on any or if prior records show me that I am wrong on some IDs, please let me know!

That should be it for all 3 parks currently located in Mandai. The number of species made known to public are mostly big-name species as well as some obscure ones, however most of the animals (as per my experience anyway) are often kept behind the scenes and are not made known to the public apart from those lucky enough to spot them during the back-of-house tours or if they happened to ask if "___ species" is present or not.

Large majority of species especially not been publicly known go to the herp, invert and aquatics departments (granted I myself would have zero idea most of these were present or even existed if not for a friend who spent all his years there meticulously recording every species present.)

Good news is that, while it WRS is outsourcing a lot of their species elsewhere, the years ahead look good for the orgnaisation as the new curatorial team seem interested in introducing new species to the parks (Tasmanian Devil, Okapi, Sifaka, etc), as well as possibly seeing some old "favorites" return, particularly hoofstock.

If I can, I shall try to compile Jurong's inventory as well. Though it should take me many more days than this, as they are constantly moving their birds around. Hopefully another forum member could fill you in then!

Thank you very much for that great work, BucerosKeeper.

While I know from Zooish, that many hoofstock species have been phased out, I wonder what happen to the sun bears. Are they still in one of the Mandai parks?

Two particular surprises in the mammals, for me, are Flat-headed Cat and Long-tailed Porcupine.

Thanks @BucerosKeeper for compiling the list. It's a shame that record keeping isn't done better especially because WRS' Chief Life Sciences Officer is the chairman of the board of Species360!

Your list seems to include many species that used to be part of the WRS collection. I am fairly certain that the following species have been completely phased out (died out/exported) over the years:

    Caracal (Caracal caracal)
    Asian Golden Cat (Catopuma temminckii)
    Jungle Cat (Felis chaus)
    Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis)
    Golden Jackal (Canis aureus)
Indian Timber Wolf (Canis lupus pallipes)
    Black-backed Jackal (Canis mesomelas mesomelas)
    Banded Palm Civet (Hemigalus derbyanus)
    Owston's Palm Civet (Chrotogale owstoni)
    Malay Civet (Viverra tangalunga)
    Yellow-throated Marten (Martes flavigula indochinensis)
    Crab-eating Raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus)
    Common Warthog (Phacochoerus africanus)
    Blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra)
    Scimitar-horned Oryx (Oryx dammah)
    Malayan Giant Squirrel (Ratufa bicolor)
    Long-tailed Porcupine (Trichys fasciculata)
    Patas Monkey (Erythrocebus patas)
    Agile Wallaby (Macropus agilis)
    Parma Wallaby (Macropus parma)
    Antilopine Kangaroo (Osphranter antilopinus)

I've honestly never come across any information about WRS ever holding flat-headed cats before. Must have been some time ago? Or an illicit acquisition!

I won't comment on the birds (because of the situation with Jurong moving birds about), fish (too exhaustive) or invertebrates (not tracked in WRS' species records). But a few mammal species are missing from the list:

    Mueller's Gibbon (show department)
    Southern Pig-tailed macaque (show department)
Guyanan Red Howler Monkey (River Safari)
    Malayan Sun Bear (Zoo)
Lesser Mousedeer (T.kanchil; distinct from T.javanicus) (Zoo/Night Safari)

As for the potential new species like Okapi and Sifaka, I understand these and other African species are being planned for "Rainforest Park South" (working title), which to my knowledge is not Southeast Asia themed.

Nope. 2 are Sumatran, 2 are Indian, and 1 is Sri Lankan.

My current duties are pretty hectic as is so I apologise for any discrepancies!

Thanks for that! I can't believe I missed out on Sun Bears, and the Lesser Mousedeer too!

I am not aware of the three primate species mentioned, granted show animals are kept distinct from the "display animals," and as I do not have contacts in the show sector I wouldn't know!

Ocelot is still in the collection, the keepers take it out for walks around the zoo grounds towards the end of the day when there are fewer guests around. The plan is to either house them in Cat Country or to be used as an ambassador animal (like the Crab-eating Raccoon).

I think Patas Monkeys been moved off-show, as they kept escaping from their habitat (I'm not aware if they are granted free-range), because while I was working there we actually did come across one at Garden by the Pavillion, which was swiftly picked up by the Primate team! And they said "this happens all the time"

Also, a friend working in the Nutrition Department says owstoni is still in the collection, but he won't tell me where and how many as that is "classified information" (frustrating as these are species I'd love to see myself!). WRS is also part of a global project to better develop a captive diet for these animals and they are testing out different menus to see what works best for the animals, and compiling data with other zoos.

Flat-headed Cat was received by an anonymous donor (as are quite a number of animals in the collection), I believe it is 1.0? I am not sure what the decision for it is but if they are planned for the new Rainforest Park/Night Safari, it will be kept. Otherwise the park will try to determine it's origin and send it to the wildlife authority of the country.

Other than that, thank you for listing out phased out species, as well as adding on! I'll try to edit my list to better keep in tune with the info I've been provided as well as yours :D

And as for the Rainforest Park South, you are correct! From my understanding, there will be Amazonian, joint African-Madagascan, and Oceanic (Papua New Guinea, Australia and Indonesia) zones implemented as well. Lots of new species being considered that would make any zoochatter drool, though realistically I suppose only half or less of the planned species would actually make it to the actual product.

The curatorial team for Fragile Forest and Reptopia actually visited Zoo Zürich a couple of years ago and have enacted an idea to recreate an improved Fragile Forest 2.0 (working title) based on the Masoala Halle for the new park.

The Patas Monkeys are currently being exhibited with the Mantled Guerezas. This is a step down for them as they were previously allowed to free-range the Primate Kingdom zone, as they had begun to get comfortable with guests and accepting handouts.

Here's a shot of them being roudy at the Gardens by the Pavillion site, taken by a friend: Screenshot_20200519-170246_Instagram.jpg

Thanks @BucerosKeeper. The Patas Monkeys were no longer on display at Primate Kingdom as of March this year (my last visit) and there are no records of WRS holding them anymore. Likewise i'm aware that 1.1 Ocelots ('Santos' and 'Gayle') were kept off show at Cat Country for the longest time. But I understand that both have passed on due to old age either late last year or early this year.

As for the Owston's civets, I'm aware that WRS is participating in the WAZA nutritional study for the specie, but I've not come across any information of WRS holding them.

For Rainforest Park South, indeed I've seen plans for a large Madagascar-themed walk-through 'aviary' (for lack of a better word) with lemurs, which looks to be more than a hectare in size. I'm glad they're learning from the best at Zoo Zürich /Masoala Halle. I haven't heard about the Amazon and Oceania zones though.
