Inuka the polar bear's health has deteriorated and may be euthanized at the end of the month if it continues to decline. Singapore Zoo’s polar bear Inuka 'in declining health', may be put to sleep in late April
Boy actually. I think the Zoo is simply putting out the word early to give visitors a fair chance to see him before he is put down.
Ah! I could have sworn I saw a ‘her’ in one of those articles. I wish zoos would do things like this more often.
Inuka the last polar bear at Singapore Zoo has been euthanized this morning. The zoo will not be acquiring any more polar bears for the forseeable future. The polar bear exhibit will be converted to a saltwater habitat to house sealions. www.channelnewsasia.com/news/lifestyle/inuka-polar-bear-put-down-singapore-zoo-10173324
I’m glad that the zoo were so open about his declining health and provided advance notification of this. I can definitely think of worse things to use the enclosure for moving forward.
It's definitely a much better idea than turning it into a brown bear exhibit, which was usually mentioned. And it opens up the current sea lion exhibit to redevelopment as well.
The 4 WRS parks have been accredited to EAZA and ZAA. Wildlife Reserves Singapore achieves double accreditations for high standards of animal care and welfare
WRS continues to inch towards full protected contact for elephant management. Major redesign and construction of elephant exhibits at the Zoo and Night Safari will take another 3 to 5 years. Elephants no longer made to perform at Singapore Zoo
Never having been to Singapore I'm not familiar with their elephant exhibits at the zoo. Are they building new larger exhibits for the elephants when they talk about redesigning them? Or are their current exhibits large enough by modern standards and they are rebuilding barns and infrastructure?
The current elephant exhibits (1 at the Zoo and 2 at Night Safari) are on the small side, and for one of the exhibits housing an all female herd, the barn is not attached and the elephants have to be walked between the enclosure and barn.
Thanks for the information. It sounds like it will be quite a comprehensive modernization of their elephant facilities ahead then as they transition to de-emphasizing show elements.
