A litter of African wild dog pups was born this month: African Painted Dog at S'pore Zoo seen eating newborn pup The news was uncovered by a visitor who photographed one of the adults eating a newborn pup: The Mandai Wildlife Group (MWG) confirmed the incident, sharing that it was recorded by its animal care team on Oct. 22 at around 11am. MWG explained that it is not uncommon for mothers in the wild to abandon newborns that are not doing well.
I understand many more pups were successfully born. The Zoo will typically announce births after a couple of months, when the babies have passed their most vulnerable stage.
Yes I hoped the cannibalism of the pup was an isolated incident (e.g. the mother eating a stillborn pup for the conservation of nutrients) but didn’t wanna jump the gun and post that assumption in case the other adults were eating them and there was no survivors in the litter - this has happened in a New Zealand zoo and at least one Australian zoo and is by no means an uncommon occurance.

1 African lion from the Zoo and 4 Asian lions from Night Safari have contracted Covid from their keepers. Fifth lion in Singapore tests positive for Covid-19
An interesting piece of news, almost like a scene from a movie! The lions are not from or destined for Mandai Wildlife Group but in transit in Singapore (the airline did not reveal the origin or destination of the lions). MWG is caring for the lions until they can continue with their journey. Two lions sedated after breaking free of container in Changi Airport
