There was a Black-footed Ferret birth at SCBI according to their Instagram.

Happy New Year! Since the zoo posted a video of her on their facebook, I can reveal that the zoo has a new female southern tamandua, Chiquita, from the Point Defiance Zoo. For those who are familiar with the zoo's other tamanduas, Cayenne was actually discovered to be a male and has a future breeding recommendation with Chiquita. Right now Chiquita is exhibited by herself and Cayenne is still with Manny, the zoo's other male tamandua, in the same exhibit.

The zoo has a new one-year-old male komodo dragon named Onyx, that moved into his new habitat on December 10th.

I didn't think this question is enough for its own thread, but does anyone know if the zoo's videos are free to use as long as they're given proper credit? I was planning on incorporating some clips within a video I was thinking of making but figured someone here might have a better clue. I know that the zoo provides hi-res photos for the media to use when something from the zoo will show on the news and I didn't see any copyright indication on these, just a "copy link" button that could be used to download the clips. I wouldn't be earning any profit off of the finalized video that I create so I figure it would be under "fair use" guidelines right?

Although public knowledge that wasn’t ever really talked about. The zoos elephant herd is fully integrated as of recently. Here’s a cute little Facebook video about why it took so long to integrate.

Has it been announced when the zoo will reopen? I was thinking about visiting in March possibly.

All reopening, everywhere, are dependent on the pandemic restrictions in place at the time. One cannot predict with any certainty when an establishment will reopen in 2021.

Philadelphia Zoo has announced that they're reopening in February, so not all zoos are dependent on the specific time. ;) Just wondering if Smithsonian had announced a general reopening time frame like Philly had.

    Thanks for your reply! :)

But if the mayor or governor calls for a lock down it won't reopen.. Same everywhere. Many places are in their second or third lockdowns even after stating they would reopen on a specific time.

Interesting. Are you sure that they're not reopening in February? I've heard that they are from multiple members that live in the area.

Philly's e-mails have said they'll re-open on Feb 1st. That could change with the new administration though. Turtle Back is saying the same. I haven't gotten anything from Smithsonian about when they'll reopen (for the zoo or museums).

Judging from the zoos most recent post, it looks as if the yard one expansion was completed some time during the shutdown. It looks much more spacious. On a side note, can we all admire Spike's tusks!

Spike's channeling his inner Mammuthus meridionalis! Can't think of any other Asian Elephant other than his dad Dalip at Zoo Miami which has such a sharply angled sloping back.

Interesting to see how large his tusks are. I’m so used to seeing pictures of Spike with his caps over his tusks because they keep breaking. Seems like DC’s finally broken that spell. Btw, does anyone know if the zoo still plans to breed him with their younger cows?

Yeah, what happened to the supposed pregnancy that Maharani was supposed to have? Was the mating from spring 2018 not successful? Also, I think that not having that tire swing toy that he used to play with at Calgary Zoo has helped him from breaking his tusks.
