I'm heading down to Melbourne at the start of next month. I would like to see a song thrush while I'm there and I've heard that the zoo is a good place to see them. Has anyone seen any lately in the zoo grounds? Do they have a prefered area in the zoo?

I've never looked while there but NZ ones like shrubbery near lawns (i.e. so they have both cover and open space - they tend to spend less time in the open than blackbirds though).

The zoo is a good spot for tree sparrows too apparently.

I don't recall ever seeing Song Thrush at the Zoo, but I wouldn't really be looking for them. The Japanese Garden might be a good area to have a look though, habitat similar to what Chlidonias described, and generally quite a quiet area of the Zoo.

Thanks guys. I'l keep an eye out for the tree sparrows too. I'm on another birding forum so I'll ask there as well.
