Here, we'll discuss about the animal species kept at the Rio de Janeiro zoo (now called Bioparque do Rio). I'll divide the animals by their respective areas, and exhibits, as well as their taxonomical classes. Planned and off-show species will also be added, just like free-roaming and wild creatures.

I forgot to translate the name of the Jardim Burle Marx area to English (its translated name is "Burle Marx Garden"). I also forgot to add the house sparrow (pardal-comum - (Passer domesticus)) to the wild/free-roaming list.

That's one nicely formulated list, @Enzo , congratulations! Still gonna read it completely with more calm, but it's a great work.

I also forgot to add the maroon-bellied parakeets (tiriba-de-testa-vermelha - (Pyrrhura frontalis)). They live in the 5th exhibit, which is the big walkthrough aviary.

No, I don't think they've started building the aquatic animal area yet.

@Enzo said the keepers told him the zoo has phased them out. "Pipo" went to Curitiba zoo and "Paulinho" to Sorocaba zoo. And if I'm not wrong, Rio zoo's fan André Sebastião informed @Enzo that "Yoko" probably died.

Yes. Do you remember that early this year, a female even escaped, and made a blast for those silly anti zoo freaks? Gosh, at those times, I saw one of the most unfear and ridiculous comments I had ever seen a celebrity make. Don't even like to remember.
Returning to the main issue, they nowadays keep this female (Kelly) and a male that came from Rio (Paulinho).

Guys, do you remember André (the owner of the zoo's non-official blog)? Well, he told me he met the zoo's director, who said the institution is planning to have (or to expose, if they're already in the collection) southern cassowaries (casuar-do-sul - (Casuarius casuarius) and they'll probably be housed in the Jardim Burle Marx area. Other things he told him were that the Imersão Tropical area would have over 120 species of animals and the howler monkeys (bugio - Alouatta spp.) are going to be housed in the Ilha dos Primatas area.

    120 species ?

Somehow I'm very skeptical about that.

Cassowaries at Jardim Burle marx? I'm considering they will make a separated exhibit for them in there, right?
About Imersão tropical, it already holds something around 50 species if I'm not wrong, right? Are they gonna add more or is 120 a previous number that will be no longer achieved?
About the howlers, it's really great that they will be part of the Ilha dos primatas. I actually consider those exhibits pretty well formulated. They fixed a problem me and @Onychorhynchus coronatus talked about some time ago, wich is the lack of handling area in many island like exhibits. In this case, besides they adding this issue I mentioned, they did a great work with the climbing structures and circulation area.

@Enzo Just to be clear, I didn't mean my previous to come across as rude or dismissive.

I was simply stating that 120 species sounds like a stated desired outcome by the bioparque (perhaps they were referring to their long term goal / vision ?) but it sounds very over ambitious to me in terms of feasibility.

Of course it would be great if they do manage it and even better if this showcases native biodiversity but I'm skeptical because even some of the European and North American collections don't hold as many species.

Man, I also think 120 might be a little too much, but Rio kept (at least before the renovation, not sure about now) a really huge collection of birds and small primates for what I know. It wouldn't scare me if they had something near this number or even more, and the vivariums are really huge. Let's see... For now, as I said, I think they are keeping something around 50 species on the vivariums, if I'm not wrong.

Yes could be, I guess time will tell whether they do achieve that goal but anyway I'm glad they are revamping the zoo because it did need it.

Yeah, it's a great renovation in a very needy zoo. While we gotta wait to analyze the real results of conservation, the environmental education seems to be already great in there.

I have some news for you, guys. I forgot to mention that there is a wild/escaped blue-and-gold macaw (arara-canindé - (Ara ararauna) in the surroundings of the zoo, which visits the institution simply to "date". The specimen has been doing this for more than ten years. Then, we have the Barbary sheep. According to the zoo's director, one of the ewes had a lamb last week. Lastly, I have some unfortunate news: Tanga, the orangutan who gave birth to both females currently living at the zoo has passed away.
