Now, I can't exactly say that I've seen all of these at Chester (as my memory isn't so good with some of them), but here's some of the past animals I think should/could make a comeback. Vicunas/Guanacos Greater Rheas Emus Ostriches Scimitar-Horned Oryxes California Sea Lions Gila Monsters Anaconda Beaded Lizards Western Grey Kangaroos Red-Necked Wallabies Serval Przewalski's Horses Prehensile-Tailed Skinks Maned Wolf Coatis Red Titis These are all the animals I can think of right now, but if I can remember anymore I will hopefully update this list.
As someone of the same age as you @Animallover1998, I also remember a lot of these species from my younger years on zoo visits. The s.c. oryx, horses and gemsbok were always my favourites! If I remember rightly, the maned wolves were somewhere around the old condor enclosure by the bridge and the butterfly house? (The smell was always quite distinctive!)
the butterfly house occupies the site of the old maned wolf ewnclosure, which itself was built on the site of the old jackal and hyaena paddocks, species held there included collared peccary, Bagot goat, spotted hyaena, dingo, black-backed jackal, striped hyaena and golden jackal I'm still working on updating my species lists for Chester Zoo, I had done a lot of work for the next update, but when I was saving it my PC crashed, I lost the lot. Nevertheless, newer members of Zoochat may find the 2013 version of interest. Chester Zoo - Chester Zoo old species 2013 update
Apologies to bring this thread back but I can think of a fewspecies that I miss seeing at Chester Vicuna/ guanacos and rhea Scimitar horned oryx Gemsbok Ostrich Livingstone fruit bats Yellow mongoose Servals Red birds of paradise South american coatis Western Grey kangaroos
I miss the red birds of paradise. It's a shame that all the effort in trying to breed them after the initial success came to nothing when the new female was found to be infertile. I'd like them to try again with birds of paradise in the future.
Since this thread has been resurrected: I really should have included short--beaked echidna in my original list.....
I have my fingers crossed hopefully Gorillas AND Pygmy Hippos will be displayed there one day in a Congo Forest precinct. Gorillas were in Chester's plans; but this'll obviously be a little down the line.
