    ha haa!!!!!

well, she barely moved from her mud wallow all day, but my fellow forum members i have joined the "seen a sumatran rhino" club!

and i can't stress how much i loved it.

its true, there IS a female sumatran rhino living in a wildlife department owned zoo just outside of kota kinabalu. but is also true there is just one in captivity in all of borneo, this is the female that lived in the sepilok reserve till her "mate" died from a fallen tree.

just wanted to brag. post pics and vids when i get back.

Toddy - if I remember correctly Copenhagen had one in the 60's/70's when the only other one in captivity was at Basel. Might have been before your time though!

Sadly it was :(. And my mum keeps bragging about her having seen it ;). The rhino's name was Subur, and she was actually quite famous in Copenhagen.

If she is from Sepilok she must belong to the increadibly rare Bornean subspecies of Sumatra Rhino, with less than 40 remaning in the wild. I visited the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre in 2005 where they keept 3 (2 females and 1 male) Sumatran Rhinos at the time.

I saw plenty of orangutans but unfortunely you were only allowed to walk along a small part of the rhino encloaser, so I didnt see any. The encloaser was really spectular, they had just fenced in a large part of rainforest, the animals had become very shy and not even the people working with them saw them often, also with free-raning orangs in the trees above the rhino encloaser.

There was a large board with photos of all them aswell as history etc. Our guide stated that they runned a breeding programme for this species but to my knowledge they have never breed at Sepilok, very sad to hear that they dont seems to have any left anymore, could very well have been the last attempt in saving this species. The Sepilok animals was the only Bornean Rhinos kept in captivity.

Congrat pat-welcome to da' club! I will seize this opportunity:
@Toddy, I happened to see a great older (1950s/60s?) Zoo poster of a Sumatra Rhino by the Copenhagen Zoo at Erfurt Zoo. Is it possible for You to get me one at Copenhagen?

That's a coincidence. I have been looking for that exact poster for years! So unfortunatly at the moment, no. We have a whole bunch of posters by the same artist from the same years in our zoo-shop, but not the one of Subur. I think I will try to look into it more however, and I will let you know if i find anything.

Okay so who's been peed on by a Sumatran rhino? *raises hand*

San Diego Zoo held one of the Cincy rhinos when it first came to the US. I was standing outside his enclosure with a throng of people. There was a sign near the enclosure warning of "rhino spray". While I was standing there, he lifted his tail, and it was too crowded to get out of the way in time.

I've also seen Andalas when he was in LA, but there was no urine involved that time.
