Sumatran Rhinoceros in captivity?

I didn’t see a thread for this but are there any Sumatran Rhinoceros at zoos. I think there was one at San Diego in the 90’s but that’s all.

 

Except for one facility in Sumatra itself, nope. Last ones outside of the native range was Cincinnati.

No, there are no Sumatran rhinos in captivity currently unless you count a few that are kept in a kind of compound in Indonesia. Cincinnati zoo had several rhinos until recently. See other threads and comments for more info on the Cincy rhinos.

It is however very likely there will never be any Sumatran rhinos in zoos ever again...

Hopefully there’s a breeding program. I doubt it though. The Scimitar horned oryx way is the best option of what could happen.

 

It is a facility in Way Kambas. I am not sure if it is available to the public.

 

When were the Cincy ones there until?

Sadly the Sumatran rhino population numbers less than 100 and they are very dispersed over the island and the Indonesian government has not done nearly enough action so the most likely scenario for them is extinction at this rate.

The last one was a male called Harapan who was born at the zoo who left in 2015.

As for breeding programmes, there is certainly nothing planned within zoos if that is what you mean but of course conservationists have devised numerous plans to try and breed the last remaining rhinos.

 

I feel like every government should look at this and save endangered species...

 

Definitely agree that it's very sad, although it made sense considering he was the last one left outside Sumatra and obviously couldn't breed in Cincinnati.

 

Yeah, hopefully people can setup breeding programs for this. I doubt it will work with less than 50 individuals. Hope though.

 

Unfortunately the world is not that simple and most governments have other priorities, one only has to look at the current issues in Mexico with the vaquita porpoises.

 

Los Angeles had one for a while. White Oak hosted Harapan for a little bit.

 

Maybe I should start a thread for vaquitas too to discuss about them.

 

Wow. And to think they are almost gone.

 

I believe that none of the captive females can breed, so breeding programs likely won’t happen any time soon.
