We have been the sun bear crazies for how many years now? :D

Anyways. I applaud any move and I applaud any movement within the population and maybe the new coordinator checks on incidents around Josi in 2004 they might reconsider the Frodo move fast.

A long time! It helps me to feel normal to know that I’m not the only one who would drop everything to travel across Europe to see a cub!

For sure the Burgers to Münster move strikes me to be the most bizarre decision. Although I’m obviously very pleased to know that Somnang and Rotana will finally be utilised.

Thank you for sharing this! I will be honest and admit that I was really hoping for a boy to boost the population of younger (potentially fertile) males in Europe. However, this playful, energetic and absolutely adorable little baby being healthy is all that really matters!

Chester Zoo has conformed that Milli as given birth to a sun bear cub!
Europe has not had a year with two surving cubs born in almost exactly a decade when Berlin (2/2008 Lailani) and Cologne (08/2008 Gula) had a cub each! :):):):):)

    @SabineB

Just because I am curious: What was the last year with at least one surviving sun bear cub?

For Europe that would have been Babu in Usti Nad Labem in 2011.
Indera (Belfast) originally from Singapore Zoo was born in 2010.
Teddy and Anabell in Madrid had twins in 2009 that only survived two days.

Last sun bears born in the US was 2008 twins in San Diego.

In 2009 Jamran and Bopha had a female cub Maly and in early 2010 Mary was born to Arataki and Otay in Canberra zoo.

I am pretty sure there was at least one cub born in the above time frame in Japan but I do not have the details.

Just seen on the Colchester Zoo website (under breeding programmes tab) that Clive Barwick is the ESB coordinator for Malayan Sun Bear...does anyone know when the studbook changed from Dr. Lydia Kolter at Cologne Zoo?

I believe it changed hands in 2017

Things have certainly progressed in recent months. Two (successful) births and a chain of moves underway to create more (potential) breeding pairs.

Would any of the moves involve Jo-Jo or Srey Ray from Colchester as they been at the zoo 8 years (and longer before they arrived) with no breeding occurring in that time? Would a swap with one of the males at Edinburgh be a possibility?

One of the Edinburgh males is off to join two females at Arnhem shortly. As part of the chain of moves I mentioned before

Edinburgh will also get a female in the future

Colchester - nothing mentioned so just wait and see.

Sure thing! The other male is due for Burgers' in Arnhem.
I expect that Edinburgh Zoo will also receive a new female.

I need some footage of sun bear and moon bear cubs. Is the cub at chester the only such individual in Europe at the moment? Thanks

The male sun bear 'Somnang' at Burgers' Zoo has recently moved to Łódź Zoo in Poland. According to Łódź Zoo, he will soon get a new partner there. Burgers' Zoo now has only five female bears, the two mothers with their three daughters.
