hy everybody, just came across this superb Barbary lion and I was wondering if somebody can recognise the zoo and the lion: Many thanks!!!
Well first things first, that's probably not a pure Barbary. It's likely what's called a zoomix, or a hybrid of multiple subspecies. Though with the recent lumping of all lions north of the Congo into P. leo leo, we wouldn't know unless we gave them a DNA test
many thanks! yes, seems smaller in body size but the face is more handsome than of other lions with similarly big mane; any idea of his name and location? any proper Barbary lions that you know that were tested by the zoos?
There's plenty of lions which are claimed to be Barbary, but none actually *are* given the fact the taxon is extinct. The best one can get are lions with some Barbary heritage and which display the general phenotype.
yes, I know that they are extinct in the wild but I like to believe that some captive ones have enough Barbary heritage... I am looking for a big, handsome one to photograph; I have already seen dozens of them on the Internet and I do not like most of them... that is why I asked about the one in the video; this is an example of "Barbary" lion I do not like: https://static.comicvine.com/uploads/original/11129/111292360/5300907-7257012423-HP743.jpg
Why do you not like the one in the photo you linked? Le Parc Des Felins in France should be easy for you to get to if you are in Belgium. They had three Barbary type males in one of their massive lion enclosures, but they looked quite old (so I don't know if they are still alive). Here is a photo of two of them that I posted in the gallery, taken in April 2013. the big boys | ZooChat
