A young male chimp was unfortunately found dead in the exhibit this morning:

Edit: The media is now reporting that he was found in the water moat: “Emotional staff could be seen comforting each other as the 10-year-old ape, named Mogli, was fished out of a pond about 10.30am.” Tragic news which I don’t think is made any easier by the media filming and publishing photos of when the zoo collected the body...

A Hamadryas Baboon was recently born to the zoo's troop:

"The zoo recently welcomed some lockdown babies, including seven adorable joeys and a cheeky baby baboon. Keep an eye out for them when you visit next."

Sydney Zoo have received a new pack of seven African Wild Dogs. Their original four males (the ones imported from the Czech Republic) have been transferred to Altina Wildlife Park for breeding. Glad to see these unrelated males will hopefully contribute to the region's population. Edit: Altina have announced that the seven wild dogs that moved to Sydney are all females - Emi, Fanta, Gadina, Hasina, Imani, Jaffa and Kamili.

An excellent move for both facilities. Sydney now has a much larger group to display, and there will be an infusion of new genetics being bred into the Australasian population now. A huge win all around!

I've recently seen images of tropical marine fish at Sydney Zoo and confirmed with the zoo that they have just established two new tanks in the aquarium. They converted two of the smaller freshwater tanks to marine ones recently to diversify their fish collection. Staff were kind enough to provide a species list for both tanks for those interested. All the new marine fish and inverts are settling in well:

    Tank 1:
    0.0.8 Barbour’s Seahorse Hippocampus barbouri
    0.0.20 Peppermint Shrimp Lysmata wurdemanni
    0.0.4 Sand-sifting Starfish Astropecten polyacanthus

    Tank 2:
    0.0.20 Ocellaris Clownfish Amphiprion ocellaris
0.0.2 Pink Skunk Clownfish Amphiprion perideraion
    0.0.20 Green Chromis Chromis viridis
    0.0.2 Coral Beauty Centropyge bispinosa
    0.0.1 Lavender Tang Acanthurus nigrofuscus
0.0.2 Golden-head Sleeper Goby Valenciennea strigata
0.0.4 Redline Cleaner Shrimp Lysmata amboinensis
    0.0.4 Sand-sifting Starfish Astropecten polyacanthus
    0.0.10 Bubbletip Anenome Entacmaea quadricolor
    0.0.1 Magnificent Anemone Heteractis magnifica
