@Zorro, urgency affirmative - for hippos. Whereas I recognise the worries over hoof stock too. The former does not make the latter less urgent.

Article on the Regent Honeyeater Release this week:

    Record regent release

A large crowd gathered on Wednesday to see the first half of 100 birds bred at Taronga Zoo take to the wild, with the remainder to be released on Sunday.

The article in my post above said almost 200 Regent Honeyeater's have previously been released.

Longest Living fish in a Zoological Facility has died:

World farewells oldest captive fish, from 'living fossil' species endemic to Qld

'Granddad' was just a sprightly juvenile lungfish when he undertook a three-week trip aboard a ship from Australia to the United States in 1933

The Australian freshwater fish had been brought across the salty seas from Taronga Zoo in Sydney with another lungfish to wow crowds during the Chicago World's Fair in 1933-1934.

He was seen by more than 104 million people during his time in Chicago, according to Shedd Aquarium, who sadly told the world of his death on Tuesday.

The long-lived fish, aged in his mid-90s, was euthanised after his body began shutting down.

He is considered the longest-living fish in a zoological setting, Shedd Aquarium CEO Bridget Coughlin said.

Granddad left Taronga over 80 years ago but I thought this might have been of interest to some people given his longevity.

    Helping hand for injured Echidna

Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s Wildlife Hospital has been caring for a sub-adult Echidna for the past six weeks that was found in an abandoned mine shaft near Stuart Town. The local resident who came across the Echidna went to great lengths to rescue it and took it to a WIRES carer who in turn brought it to the Zoo’s Wildlife Hospital.

The Echidna had extensive injuries, it was weak and had severe wounds to its feet and wasn’t eating. It underwent an initial assessment from the Zoo’s veterinarian as well as a series of tests before receiving intensive rehabilitation including antibiotics, pain relief, fluids and electrolytes.

The Echidna has improved remarkably given its debilitated state on presentation to the Wildlife Hospital and is now recovering well and likely to be released back to the wild within the next month.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s Wildlife Hospital sees over 500 wildlife cases every year. If you come across an injured or orphaned native animal you can contact the Wildlife Hospital on 6881 1461 or WIRES on 1300 027 905 for assistance.

I'm eagerly awaiting an update on the chimps by @tigersam who was supposed to be visiting last Thursday. If we're lucky she took some photos of the new tiger exhibit (or the chimps).

Went to Taronga yesterday, and here's a few updates:
-the two male squirrel monkey's have been removed from the group, I'm assuming to control breeding.
-the meerkats have been moved into a new enclosure across from Gung's enclosure.
-tamarins aren't on display in the old Spider monkey enclosure (not sure if this is permanent).
