    Plecotus
Up to eighteen or more species, one of which is represented in the Zoochat galleries.

This is a really complex genus, with a lot of splitting and lumping taking place. At its most constricted there was only a single species (Plecotus auritus) with a multitude of subspecies. In the species list presented here, there are many which elsewhere are treated as subspecies of (in particular) Plecotus auritus and Plecotus austriacus.

    Brown Long-eared Bat Plecotus auritus
Two subspecies: auritus, begognae. Other former subspecies have been split as full species.

The second species in the genus is the Angolan Hairy Bat Cistugo seabrae. There is some disagreement over whether C. lesueuri should be treated as a distinct species or whether it is only a subspecies of C. seabrae.

    Little Brown Bat Myotis lucifugus
Five subspecies (alascensis, carissima, lucifugus, relictus, pernox) but there is genetic evidence that this is a species-complex and that these five taxa are actually all individual species.

    Whiskered Bat Myotis mystacinus
Three subspecies currently recognised: caucasicus, mystacinus, occidentalis. Various earlier subspecies have been elevated to full species (e.g. alcathoe, aurascens, brandtii, davidii, montivagus, etc) or discarded.

    Black Mouse-eared Bat Myotis nigricans
Three subspecies: extremus, nigricans, osculatii (there is considerable variation in the treatment of subspecies, and it may be a species complex anyway)

    Monticelli's Mouse-eared Bat Myotis oxygnathus
    Monotypic.

This is the European species commonly known as the Lesser Mouse-eared Bat. It was formerly (or often still) included as a subspecies of the Lesser Mouse-eared Bat M. blythii (of which the type specimen came from India). Another subspecies (punicus) has also been split from M. blythii as a full species. Genetically these three bats are all distinct. The four subspecies retained in M. blythii may also all be full species (ancilla, blythii, lesviacus, omari).

There are over 100 other species in the genus Myotis. Because of the number of species I have put the arrangement of the species in the following list alphabetically by subgenera rather than just as a single alphabetical list. I have left the above pictured species in this list (marked with asterisks) so that it can be easily seen to which subgenera they each belong. By no means should you take the following list as a definite list of species (or even of subgenera), because the taxonomists are always playing around with this genus.
