Neotominae (North American rats and mice)

About 125 species in sixteen genera: Baiomys, Habromys, Hodomys, Isthmomys, Megadontomys, Nelsonia, Neotoma, Neotomodon, Ochrotomys, Onychomys, Osgoodomys, Peromyscus, Podomys, Reithrodontomys, Scotinomys, Xenomys

Only ten species are represented in the Zoochat galleries, from four genera (Baiomys, Neotoma, Peromyscus and Reithrodontomys).

There are three subfamilies of exclusively New World rodents in Cricetidae: Neotominae (c.125 spp), Tylominae (11 spp), and Sigmodontinae (c.375 spp). There is some dispute about how best to arrange these three groups. Some authors would combine them all under one subfamily (Sigmodontinae); others split them into three subfamilies. I have followed the latter course and split them in three.

The subfamily Neotominae is divided into four Tribes:

Baiomyini (American pigmy mice and singing mice)
Four species in two genera: Baiomys, Scotinomys

One species is depicted here, from the genus Baiomys.

    Neotomini (woodrats and pack rats)
About 24 species in four genera: Hodomys, Nelsonia, Neotoma, Xenomys

Two species are depicted here, from the genus Neotoma.

    Ochrotomyini (Golden Mouse)
One species, in the genus Ochrotomys

The single species is not depicted here.

Reithrodontomyini (deer mice and American harvest mice)
About 95 species in nine genera: Habromys, Isthmomys, Megadontomys, Neotomodon, Onychomys, Osgoodomys, Peromyscus, Podomys, Reithrodontomys

Seven species are depicted here, from the genera Peromyscus and Reithrodontomys.

In the following posts the genera will be presented as per the above (alphabetically within individual Tribes).

Neotomini (woodrats and pack rats) is the second Tribe from Neotominae. It contains about 24 species in four genera: Hodomys, Nelsonia, Neotoma, Xenomys.

Two species are represented in the Zoochat galleries, both from the genus Neotoma.

    ........................................................

    Neotoma
About twenty species, of which two are represented in the Zoochat galleries.

    White-throated Woodrat Neotoma albigula
Seven subspecies: albigula, brevicauda, laplataensis, mearnsi, seri, sheldoni, venusta. The subspecies melanura from northwest Mexico was split as a cryptic species in 2015. Until 2001 the White-toothed Woodrat Neotoma leucodon was lumped into N. albigula hence the numbers of subspecies often quoted for the latter species (up to 15).

    Nelson's Woodrat Neotoma nelsoni
    Bolanos Woodrat Neotoma palatina
    Sonoran Woodrat Neotoma phenax
    Stephens' Woodrat Neotoma stephensi

The following three taxa are now extinct. They were all endemic to small islands off Baja California and are thought to have been wiped out by introduced cats. They may be treated as full species or (as the IUCN does) as subspecies of the extant Neotoma bryanti:

Anthony's Woodrat Neotoma anthonyi (from the Todos Los Santos islands; last seen in 1926).

Bunker's Woodrat Neotoma bunkeri (known only from a series of specimens collected in 1931 from the Coronados Islands).

    Peromyscus
About 55-60 species, of which six are represented in the Zoochat galleries.

    Cactus Mouse Peromyscus eremicus
At least 15 subspecies have been used for P. eremicus but in 2000 the Northern Baja Deer Mouse Peromyscus fraterculus was split off as a full species which complicated matters. Mammals of Mexico lists nine subspecies for P. eremicus and six for P. fraterculus, although they were only considering those which are found in Mexico (both species also occur in the southern USA).

North American Deer Mouse Peromyscus maniculatus
Almost 70 subspecies have been named, and it is known that some occur sympatrically without interbreeding or have distinct habitat preferences; it is almost certainly a species complex.

A 2019 paper [https://www.researchgate.net/public...S_OF_THE_PEROMYSCUS_MANICULATUS_SPECIES_GROUP] made some headway to making genetic sense of the complex, dividing "Peromyscus maniculatus" into six species, with P. maniculatus covering most of the eastern side of North America and P. sonoriensis most of central and western North America, with additional species P. arcticus and P. keeni in the northwest, P. gambelii in the southwest USA and Baja California, and P. labecula in extreme south USA and most of Mexico.

Under this division of species, the Wisconsin animals depicted below would be the true P. maniculatus; while the Arizona animal may be either P. sonoriensis or P. labecula (the ranges probably meet or overlap), or even the Black-eared Deer Mouse P. melanotis which is morphologically almost identical and also occurs in this area.

Because there are so many species in the genus Peromyscus and because the taxonomy of them is complicated, I have placed them below in their taxonomic clusters rather than just as a basic alphabetical list. Definitely do not take these groupings as definite because the taxonomy is disputed and will certainly change. I have left the species illustrated in the previous post in the list so that their relationships can be seen.

There are three subfamilies of exclusively New World rodents in Cricetidae: Neotominae (c.125 spp), Tylominae (11 spp), and Sigmodontinae (c.400 spp). There is some dispute about how best to arrange these three groups. Some authors would combine them all under this subfamily (Sigmodontinae); others split them into three subfamilies. I have followed the latter course and split them in three.

The subfamily Sigmodontinae is divided into eight Tribes as below. There is also the genus Juliomys with four species, which nobody knows where to place.

    Sigmodontini (cotton rats)
About 14 species in the single genus Sigmodon

Three of the species are depicted here.

Ichthyomyini (fish-eating rats and water mice)
About 17 species in five genera: Anotomys, Chibchanomys, Ichthyomys, Neusticomys, Rheomys

None of the species are depicted here.

    Oryzomyini (rice rats)
About 125 species in 30 extant genera: Aegialomys, Amphinectomys, Cerradomys, Drymoreomys, Eremoryzomys, Euryoryzomys, Handleyomys, Holochilus, Hylaeamys, Lundomys, Megalomys [extinct], Megaoryzomys [extinct], Melanomys, Microakodontomys, Microryzomys, Mindomys, Neacomys, Nectomys, Nephelomys, Nesoryzomys, Noronhomys [extinct], Oecomys, Oligoryzomys, Oreoryzomys, Oryzomys, Pattonimus, Pseudoryzomys, Scolomys, Sigmodontomys, Sooretamys, Tanyuromys, Transandinomys, Zygodontomys

Three species are depicted here, from the genera Oligoryzomys and Sooretamys.

    Thomasomyini (South American mice)
About 70 species in nine genera: Abrawayaomys, Aepeomys, Chilomys, Delomys, Phaenomys, Rhagomys, Rhipidomys, Thomasomys, Wilfredomys

None of the species are depicted here.

    Wiedomyini (red-nosed mice)
Two species in the single genus Wiedomys

None of the species are depicted here.

    Abrotrichini (long-clawed mice)
About 14 species in four genera: Abrothrix, Chelemys, Geoxus, Notiomys

One species is depicted here, from the genus Abrothrix.

    Akodontini (South American grass mice)
About 90 species in 15 genera: Akodon, Neomicroxus, Bibimys, Blarinomys, Brucepattersonius, Deltamys, Juscelinomys, Kunsia, Lenoxus, Necromys, Oxymycterus, Podoxymys, Scapteromys, Thalpomys, Thaptomys

One species is depicted here, from the genus Akodon.

    Phyllotini (leaf-eared mice)
About 65 species in 17 genera: Andalgalomys, Andinomys, Auliscomys, Calomys, Chinchillula, Eligmodontia, Euneomys, Galenomys, Graomys, Irenomys, Loxodontomys, Neotomys, Phyllotis, Punomys, Reithrodon, Salinomys, Tapecomys

Five species are depicted here, from the genera Andalgalomys, Auliscomys, Graomys, Irenomys and Reithrodon.

In the following posts the genera will be presented as per the above (alphabetically within individual Tribes).

    Juliomys
Four species, none of which are represented in the Zoochat galleries.

Nobody knows how to classify this genus so it is generally left out of the Tribes as incertae sedis.

Sigmodontini (cotton rats) is the first Tribe from Sigmodontinae. It contains about fourteen species in the single genus Sigmodon.

Three of the species are represented in the Zoochat galleries.

    ........................................................

    Sigmodon
Fourteen species, three of which are represented in the Zoochat galleries.

    Arizona Cotton Rat Sigmodon arizonae
Five subspecies, two of which are now extinct: cienegae, major and plenus are still extant; S. a. arizonae was last recorded in 1932, while S. a. jacksoni is apparently known only from the type specimen from 1918.

    Yellow-nosed Cotton Rat Sigmodon ochrognathus
Monotypic. Four subspecies were originally described (baileyi, madrensis, montanus, ochroganthus) based on size and colouration but since at least the 1960s these have been shown to be inconsistent, and more recently the genetics do not support multiple subspecies either.
