The captive population of the Southern ones actually looks rather untypical for this species, Hix's photo is much more typical. I have even been doubting the ID of the captive population, but I have yet to see a convincing picture of the dorsal colour ( the specific hair patch is hidden in most pictures).

I'm given to understand that the original import came from northern Tanzania, so I'm hard pushed to think of what they might be if they aren't Southern Tree Hyrax! Certainly don't look like Rock or Bush.

All three Tree hyrax species occur in N Tanzania, though the Western is restricted to one little corner, but Eastern and Southern occur on the same mountains, only separated by altitude.

I thought African bush elephants were monotypic? I’m probably wrong though. Where are the populations of these sub species located?

That is indeed the increasing status quo as I implied, but as noted in my post the matter is still under some debate - so as with other taxa where things are yet to be fully resolved, I'm listing things as broadly as possible to ensure nothing is omitted.

You have seen the photo used above of the Tailless Tenrec, right? It looks like something from The Dark Crystal. You should be grateful it has evaded you.
