Resident populations are present in central India, southern Indochina and Hainan.

    The summer breeding range of this species extends patchily from the Iberian Peninsula in the west, throughout the Mediterranean into Asia Minor and the Middle East, and also throughout southern Africa from southern Angola and central Mozambique south to Lesotho and southeast South Africa; wintering populations extend patchily throughout northern Africa and southern Spain, and also into regions of Africa where resident populations are located; the resident range of the species extends throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia and Eritrea in the east, and south throughout eastern Africa to Zambia, Malawi and northern Mozambique. Absent from the Congo Basin.

    The range of this species extends throughout New Guinea and the West Papuan and Aru Islands, and patchily south into coastal Cape York in northeast Australia.
