See, that sounds promising - I very deeply hope that I am wrong. My belief they no longer have them is predicated on the fact that in 2008 ISIS recorded one place in UAE as holding 1.1 marbled cats, and in 2011 this listing had been removed. If the collection you are referring to is non-ISIS, and received their animals from the ISIS collection - or alternatively the collection withdrew from ISIS - this could reconcile both accounts.

As I noted, I dearly hope there *are* marbled cats being bred, as I very much would love to see and photograph one myself.

Pallas' Cat at Adelaide! How long ago was that? And a few other nice species now absent from Oz/on the way out.

How is 30 years not a long time??? Unless you still remember when the world was flat... :p

Any ideas on where the cats originated from, or when they arrived? Or numbers? Or any other Australasian zoos that held them? Surely no NZ zoos?

I don't know about the 1984 cat in Hix's photo (unless he got the year wrong) but in 1986 one arrived from Chicago's Brookfield Zoo, swapped for an Adelaide-bred polar bear.

It was definitely 1984, I was attending the ASZK Conference there. I know nothing about its origins or disposition.

no, I didn't think you would have got the date wrong. I would make a guess that the 1986 one was obtained as a mate for the one you saw.

Just as an aside, the polar bear is the one named Aussie who was mentioned recently on the Gold Coast Sea World thread about their polar bear birth.

There's a debate to be had with Herpailurus vs. Puma as well.

I'd not noticed you'd gone with the old-fashioned name for Jaguarundi! I use Puma for both species myself.

Nice! I hope to get King Cheetah one day myself. Since there's one kept not too far away in a private collection that accepts volunteers quite readily, I hope to get that animal within the next two years along with getting my first zoo keeper experience.

Is the Siberian Lynx considered its own species now?

The Missouri Puma is considered to be the same as P. c. cougar now.

I believe the Sumatran Tiger is believed to be a separate species now (though TLD could tell you more about that than I!)

How dare you say your list is not that impressive and then taunt me with those species!:p

You better be pleased with it....

By the way, add Caracal caracal damarensis to my list.

I suspect the lynx was a misprint. As for the tiger, it's still under debate :p
