No, just further evidence that I need to review the taxonomy on the list. The last time I reviewed Lynx was years ago and the felid sources I could find were being hyper-splitty.

Good thing you haven't seen Iriomote Cat then, as you'd have probably put that into Mayailurus! Also for the more pertinent reason that if you saw one of those you'd be lynched by every zoochatter with an interest in small carnivores ;)

A visit to the two Berlin collections will not only get me a lot of the feline ticks you have over me.... as well as two feline ticks you lack ;)

Remember (challenges aside:)) zoo going is not a competitive sport:p.

It was that kind of era - everything in its own genus and an extra half-dozen species. I also had P. sumatrae as a species at that point but I relegated when I last reviewed Panthera (itself an good four or five years ago).

I'm currently sorting through a backlog on my photo records but will be reviewing the taxonomy of both the sightings and 'photo'd' lists when that is done.

Further to what Shorts said, not only is it not a competition but you're trying to compete with hypothetical taxon sightings - surely not sensible! :D

I am actually planning Berlin for next year - the top draw for me is Chacoan Peccary (as I should hopefully have seen Gerenuk by then - a new antelope would otherwise automatically win out!) but the opportunity to see a new subspecies each of Leopard Cat and Margay is very welcome - if the Margays look like their Zootierliste illustration then they in particular are absolute little beauties.

Indeed - the literature from the early 90's tended to either split all the feline genera into something approaching 30 monotypic genera, or lump them to the extreme of having as few as 3 genera, Felis, Acinonyx and Panthera. Of course, the prize for the weirdest combination of lumping and splitting goes to the source - cannot recall what at this moment - which lumped all the small cats into Felis, but kept Mayailurus seperate!

I much prefer the following list of genera, which does a good job of evenly dividing between lumping and splitting.

    Panthera - 5 species
    Neofelis - 2 species
    Pardofelis - 3 species
    Leptailurus - 1 species
    Caracal - 2 species
    Leopardus - 7 species
    Lynx - 2 species
    Puma - 2 species
    Acinonyx - 1 species
    Prionailurus - 4 species
    Otocolobus - 1 species
    Felis - 4 species

I will post up my list when I've worked it all out from where I've been and what they had and what I remember! I never used to write anything down and now I wish I had.

I can say I have definitely seen a King Cheetah though :D

You really do like to kill me with that, don't you:p

I can add Florida Panther to my list now (or just another NA Mountain Lion if you don't consider it a valid ssp).

I didn't think I needed to add Domestic Cat to mine lol I've seen plenty of pets and ferals!

Beardsley sounds like it has a fair few cat species then?

6 cat species (if we include Domestic Cats) is pretty good for a smaller zoo. The Amur Leopard (just went on exhibit), Canada Lynx, and Amur Tigers are in the Predators exhibit, the Domestic Cat in the New England Farmyard, the Brazilian Ocelot in the South American Rainforest, and the Bobcat is off-exhibit and is an animal ambassador.

I thought Lowry had both generic white and Malayan Tigers?
Beardsley's lynx are listed as L. c. canadensis.
    I believe Beardsley's Bobcat is L. r. rufus.
Lowry has P. c. coryi, if you consider that a valid subspecies (which I personally do).
Since when does Bronx have Sand Cats!? Or when did they have them last?

Lowry Park didn't have Malayan Tigers when I visited.
Thanks for the subspecies update for the Canada Lynx and Bobcat at Beardsley.
I'm really not sure which side to take on the whole North American Cougar taxonomy issue, so I made things simpler by listing both Lowry and ZooAmerica's Cougars as North American Cougars, since I didn't know which subspecies ZooAmerica's Cougars are.
uszoo beat me to it about the Sand Cats.

While I didn't see any Tigers on my visit, the website lists Malayan Tigers and there's a sign for them at the zoo. If they're there, they share the same enclosure with the generic white Tigers.
    No problem!
ZooAmerica's are actual North American Mountain Lions and are listed as P. c. californica, which is a synonym of P. c. cougar. Having seen both Florida Panthers and North American Mountain Lions within the past month, I can say that the Florida cats are smaller in size and are a bit darker in coloration.

They do have Malayan Tigers (2 brothers from the Bronx), and they rotate with an elderly white tiger (though I'm not sure if Yala the white tiger is still alive.)
    Interesting. Thanks.

In the further interests of accuracy, it has been pointed out me that I missed one taxon off this list - Caracal caracal michaelis - Turkmenian Caracal at Poznan.
