just general infomation, past species that are rare in aquariums now, rare species they currently have etc
@Cat-Man. I've been to Toba Aquarium last year, its one of the biggest aquariums in japan with one the largest animal inventory. So they have excellent inventories of freshwater fishes and coral fishes, but their speciality is the welfare of marine mammals, so they have sea otters, commerson dolphins, finless porpoise, walrus, harbour seal, largha seal, grey seal, baikal seal, californian,-steller and southamerican sealion, south african and south american fur seals and of course not to forget-dugong and westfrican manatee. So if you will go to japan in the future and you have a special interest in marine mammals, so Toba Aquarium is the perfect place for you.
That's an incredible line-up of marine mammals. If I'm ever able to get to Japan this place'd be a must-see for me.
just do it on your way to Australia! If you're going through KL you can get an Air Asia flight KL-Tokyo for 140 pounds or less [note no UK pound symbol on a NZ keyboard]. How can you say no to that?!
thanks for all the replies. Marguari, i think i may join you on that tour . i really must get to japan one day, go to all of these aquarium
Record-breaking Nautilus : Toba Aquarium?s chambered nautilus breaks record for oldest in captivity - AJW by The Asahi Shimbun
From what I believe in Toba, Japan, there was a first Aquarium, opened in 1955; and in 1990 he opened another different Aquarium, which over time, encompassed the old Aquarium. That is, for a short period of time, two Aquariums coexisted. That's right?.
Yes, that's right! The old Toba Aquarium was opened May 15th, 1955 and closed 1994. Construction of the new Toba Aquarium began on March 3rd, 1989 and the 240 m long building was first opened on July 7th, 1990. The new aquarium is located diagonally opposite the old aquarium and can easily be visited via Street View. The new aquarium was finally completed in July 1994. The old aquarium has a very interesting history: On April 15th, 1957 the Main Building was opened, on April 30th, 1959 a Dolphin Pool was built. On Sept. 26, 1959 the aquarium had to be closed for some days because of a typhoon. In Februar 1966 a Sealion Show was shown for the first time in a Japanese aquarium. In July 1970 a facility for penguins was built. On May 20, 1977 0.1 Dugong from the Philippines arrived in Toba - the animal lived until 1985. The aquarium gets a second Dugong already on Sept. 08th, 1977 (but this animal lived only 17 days). The arrival of a third Dugong (1.0 "Junichi" reported by the Toba Aquarium on Sept. 11, 1979. Oct. 3rd, 1983 the aquarium imported 1.3 Sea Otters from Alaska for the first time and in 1987 the aquarium acquired the first Commerson Dolphins. This is only a short excerpt from the very interesting history of the aquarium.
Here are some news from earlier this year : -A female sea otter named Kira arrived on March 17th 2021 from Adventure World in Wakayama prefecture, to join Toba aquarium's resident female Mei. Following this move Adventure World no longer keeps any sea otter. Currently there are only 4 sea otters left in Japan in 3 different aquariums. ラッコ1頭が仲間入り!本日より一般公開を始めました。 | イベント・新着情報 | 鳥羽水族館公式ホームページ -A Commerson's dolphin was born on July 11th 2021. イロワケイルカに赤ちゃん誕生! | イベント・新着情報 | 鳥羽水族館公式ホームページ -The baby walrus that was born last year died on September 9th 2021. セイウチ「テン」死亡のお知らせ | イベント・新着情報 | 鳥羽水族館公式ホームページ
