An interesting tidbit from this article is that the current Animals and Man building/surrounding area will somehow be utilized as a new exhibit for Sumatran tigers. Makes sense given the current giraffe yard's proximity to the Lianas Forest area of the zoo, and I'm curious as to how the rest of the zoo would be reimagined once Giraffe and Friends opens up.

Guess I found the answer to that question about the tigers/the rest of the zoo! (From the zoo's website)

Zoo Master Plan - Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center

I guess I shouldn't be surprised by the fact that the elephants will end up getting replaced by rhinos, but I am more curious about the "American Shores" development. The logical conclusion would be sea lions, but the Florida Panhandle/Gulf of Mexico or the Chesapeake Bay could be up for grabs as far as unique ideas/species. Either way, I'm excited for the zoo's future, and if Topeka's history of innovative exhibitry is any indication (Discovering Apes/Lianas Forest, Lion's Pride/Camp Cowabunga, the Tropical Rainforest especially), we're in for a bright future!

This is a very cool master plan! I know for sure that @RhinoHippoElephantGiraffe will be excited to know that the Topeka Zoo could be getting rhinos soon, and keeping hippos, elephants, and giraffes.

But that's not what it says. Rhinos will replace elephants.

They will keep two of the four (rhinos and giraffes), my guess is Tembo and Cora will be grandfathered and Vision'll either be transferred or grandfathered as well.

Oops, I read that wrong. Does anyone know what type of rhino will be the most likely species?

Not my place to say. Within the context of the forum thread as well as my limited knowledge of the situation. Either way, I'm stepping off my soapbox and leaving it to news.

@StoppableSan I don't know if you see it, but the word "Hippopotamus" is written in tiny letters to the left of the Tiger Care Center. I believe that means that Vision will be staying in his current habitat without changes to it.

Zuri the lioness has grown a mane:

The rare case of a lioness with a mane

There’s a discussion here about Zuri, the 18 year old lioness who’s grown a mane in recent years.

Interestingly the zoo’s curator has never heard of this phenomenon before, which surprises me because I’ve heard of numerous cases in captivity - including two in Australasian zoos in recent years.

In most, if not all cases, it’s due to a hormone imbalance - with testosterone influencing mane growth (castrated lions similarly lose their manes); and has sometimes been linked to the presence of a tumour.

According to the zoo's Facebook, Bintang was moved to the Kansas City Zoo in the week prior. It was also stated that the zoo won't have tigers on exhibit until 2023.
