I was looking throught the Kansas City Zoo photo gallery earlier and I saw a picture where there was a cheetah with a short, stubby tail

Does anyone happen to know if this could possibly be Crystal the cheetah from Toronto Zoo? She may be dead by now as she would be extremely old

If no one remembers who she is, Crystal was a cheetah who lived at Toronto Zoo. She was seen on Zoo Diaries being introduced to a male cheetah named "Bud" who I suspect had been moved. She also was seen on Discovery Animal Parade where she was used in a study as to whether female cheetahs liked spotted or king cheetahs better (Fake, dummie cheetahs were used)

She was 7 when she was seen on Zoo Diaries in the early 2000's so like I said, she just might have died

I think Crystal did pass away, but I could be wrong.

The subject of cassowaries being a future species made me wonder about the outdoor Australasia aviary, and what species were kept in it in the past. I recall Kookabura, the Lories, Wild Turkeys (!), different duck species. I *think* Victorian Crowned Pigeons were kept in there once while I was there on a summer visit.

With regards to species being moved out in hopes of coming back once construction was done, I do wonder about this with some of the old species coming back. The Pied Cormorants moved out in the mid-90s I believe, but are now back in Australasia.

Yes Meaghan, the Victoria Crowned Pigeons are allowed outside in the summer and still are I think. As for other species or old species I am not sure.

How geographically correct ;) I think the Bennett's were in there at some time, too.

The Australasia aviary has been home to a variety of species throughout the years and the seasons. For the past few years, the wild turkeys from the kids' zoo live there for the winter months. Because the Australasian inhabitants can't deal with the cold during the winter, the species have the potential to change on a yearly basis.

Species that I can recall being in the outdoor aviary include:
    Wattled cranes (1997)
    Major Mitchell's cockatoos (late 1990s)
Lorikeets + New Zealand shovellers (2002)

Thanks for the head's up, Ungulate. I thought I remembered seeing a different Cockatoo in the Australasia pavilion.

I believe that's in the old Canadian Domain area where the monorail used to pass through. Maybe a holding for the deer.

Good finds Meaghan! Jerroh and Lindy were born in 2000, so this picture was most likely late 2000/early 2001

I really do hope we get another bull elephant after the expansion

I thought it was around that time, too. Rowdy looked so much younger in these pictures too!

That would be great! Especially if it's a bull that would have otherwise been culled. It'd be a good slap in the face to the anti zoo crowd, proof that our zoo does rescue.
