Another thread about a complete bird-family - this time a very well-known one. Even that it's well-known, it has recieved little attention sofar on ZooChat and I hope this will change with this thread.
Goal is to find-out where and how many are kept ( and bred ) in the world zoos, to publish breeding-results and other toucan-related information and to look if we already have photos of the different species in our own ZooChat Gallery.
The taxonomy of this family is seen different by several scientists and I used the "CiF Checklist" which recognize 6 genera and 44 species :
    • Toco Toucan, Ramphastos toco
    • White-throated Toucan, Ramphastos tucanus

Because of the size of the family I will deal with it in parts to begin with the most well-known members of the family, the larger toucans of the genus Ramphastos :

    - Ramphastos toco -
    Toco toucan
Captive status : The most commonly kept and best-known member of the toucans. Alone in Europe 55 zoos are keeping animals of none subspecific status and several of these zoos do have ( or had ) breeding-results with the species esp. Rotterdam Zoo has bred them in good numbers ! Also in the privat sector the species is kept and bred in some numbers.
With the pure subspecies the picture looks very different:
Subspecies R. t. toco : in Europe kept at the moment at only 1 collection ( Villars les Dombes ).
Subspecies R. t. albogularis : in Europe also kept only at one collection ( Santillana del Mar )
Breeding results : As said the species is bred in a number of zoos ( for example Walsrode, Wuppertal, Aalborg, Paignton, London, Farnham and Rotterdam ).
A breeding-report can be found here : Breeding Toco Toucans | Seibels | AFA Watchbird
Photos in the Gallery : There are loads of pictures of this species to be found in the Gallery like this one taken at Rotterdam Zoo : Toco toucan | ZooChat
Notes : would be very intresting to know more about the captive status of this species in other regions then Europe.

    - Ramphastos tucanus -
    White-throated toucan ( aka Red-billed toucan )
Captive status : After the Toco toucan this is the second most-commonly kept species in Europe, at least birds of none subspecific status ( 37 zoos keeping it in Europe ).Also in the privat sector this species is kept and bred in some numbers.
    Subspecies R. t. tucanus : kept at 6 zoos
Subspecies R. t. cuvieri : not kept anymore in Europe
Subspecies R. t. inca : at the moment only one collection keeping it ( Zoo Antwerp )
Breeding results : In Europe the species has been bred at at least 2 collections ( London Zoo 2005 - 2009 and Butterflypark Empuriabrava - Spain ).
    1986 Paignton Zoo had a breeding-result with the subspecies R. t. cuvieri.
A breeding-report can be found here : A Possible First Breeding of the Red Billed Toucan | Jennings | AFA Watchbird
Photos in the Gallery:A number of pictures can be found in the Gallery like this one : Red-billed toucan at Shanghai zoo 2014-4-3 | ZooChat. A photo of the subspecies R. t. inca can be found here : red-billed tucan | ZooChat.
Notes : Same as for the Toco toucan.

    - Ramphastos ambiguus -
    Yellow-throated toucan ( aka Black-mandibled toucan )
Captive status : A rare species in European collection with only the subspecies R. a. swainsoni represented in 4 collections.
Breeding results : Found only one breeding-result for European collections : in 2000 Bioparc Fuengirola bred it.
A breeding-report from the USA can be found here : First Breeding of the Swainson's (Chestnut-mandibled) Toucan | Jennings | AFA Watchbird
Photos in the Gallery : Relative few photos of this species - and the subspecies R. a. swainsoni - are in the Gallery but this is one of them : Swainson's toucan at Amazon World, 5 April 2010 | ZooChat

    - Rhamphastos sulfuratus
    - Keel-billed toucan
Captive status : Kept at a number of European collections ( 16 ) but I don't know how the situation in other regions is. I do know however that at least the Los Angeles Zoo has kept it.
Breeding results : A pair of none subspecific animals bred succesfully at Papiliorama - Kerzers and at Rotterdam Zoo a pair of the nominate form bred succesfully in 2004 and 2005.
Photos in the Gallery : There is a good number of photos in the Gallery both from captive and wild birds like this one : Keel-billed toucan | ZooChat.

    - Ramphastos discolorus
    - Red-breasted toucan ( aka Green-billed toucan )
Captive status : At the moment this species is not kept at all in Europe but in the past several collections have kept ( and bred ) it. Don't know if its kept at the privat sector in Europe. Also from other regios I'm not aware of it being kept.
Breeding results : The species has bred succesfully several times in the past in Europe ( Walsrode 1967 and 1971, Rotterdam Zoo 1979 ) and also in the USA it has been bred several times succesfully as can be seen in these breeding reports:
Red~breasted toucans flourish in Phoenix | Buhl | AFA Watchbird
Too Many Toucans (red breasted) | Iwinski | AFA Watchbird
Breeding Red-breasted Toucans | Phoenix | AFA Watchbird
Photos in the Gallery : There are several photos in the Gallery like this one : Orinoco Rainforest - Toucan Heights Exhibit - Red-breasted Toucan | ZooChat.
Notes : This was the first Toucan-species which was bred succesfully in captivity. In 1965 some chicks hatched at Walsrode but these were not raised. 2 years later the pair was more succesfully and raised 4 chicks and photos of this raising have been published in many publications. 1971 another chick was raised at Walsrode.

    - Ramphastos brevis
    - Choco toucan
Captive status : At the moment this species is not kept in European public collections and I don't know if it is kept in privat collections.
Breeding results : In the USA the species has been bred at least one time, see :
First Breeding of the Choco Toucan | Jennings | AFA Watchbird
Photos in the Gallery : This is the only species of the Ramphastos-genus for which I didn't found pictures in our Gallery.

    - Ramphastos vitellinus
    - Channel-billed toucan
Captive status : Kept at a good number of European collections. None-subspecific specimens are kept at 26 collections and the subspecies R. v. vitellinus at 5 collections.
Both the subspecies R. v. ariel and R. v. citreolaemus are not kept anymore in Europe.
Breeding results : None-subspecifics have been bred at Antwerp Zoo in 1997 and the nominate-form has been bred at Perm during 2010 and at Walsrode in 2014.
Breeding-report from the USA can be found here :
First Captive Breeding of the Ariel Toucan | Jennings | AFA Watchbird
A possible first captive breeding of the Channel Bill Toucan | Robertshaw | AFA Watchbird
Photos in the Gallery : There is a good number of photos in the Gallery, like this one made at Duisburg Zoo : Channel-billed toucan | ZooChat

The pale -billed aracari is definitely held at Linton and ZTL also lists Exmoor which I believe to be correct. This makes 3 public collections including Berlin.

Did some research on the breeding of the Spot-billed toucanet at London Zoo during 1913 and at the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London 1913 I found some ( confusing ) information and a very nice drawing of the chick ( see Nest-young Spot-billed toucanet | ZooChat ).
In the Proceedings it first is mentioned that a chick hatched on August 11 1913 but later - in a discription and the drawing of the chick its mentioned that a chick, hatched July 1913 so I'm not sure if the species bred twice ( July AND August ) or that there was made some kind of mistake in one of the 2 notes ???

Part IV ( last part of the species accounts ) :

Dealing with the largest genus of the toucan-family, Aulacorhynchus.

    - Aulacorhynchus huallagae - Yellow-browed toucanet
Captive status : Didn't find any notes on this species being kept in captivity, either public nor privatly.
Breeding-results : Because it not being kept in captivity of course also no breeding-results are known.
Photos in the Gallery : Also there are still no photos of this species in the Gallery.

    - Aulacorhynchus coeruleicintis - Blue-banded toucanet
Captive status : In European collections this species seems to be never been kept ( Zootierliste ) but in the USA the Dallas World Aquarium is keeping this species.
Breeding-results : Here on Zoochat I found a note that the Dallas World Aquarium had the world-first-breeding with this species but I don't have any furter information about that event ( year and number bred - maybe another ZooChatter ? ).
Photos in the Gallery : Sofar only a single photo in the ZooChatt Gallery which can be found here :

Currently kept by the Dallas World Aquarium, and is also exhibited there. I’m not sure if they have bred the species, but it is likely that they have.
Several species which formerly were considered subspecies of this one are kept in the US currently. DWA has Ariel toucans, Emerald Forest Bird Gardens (which is the collection of Jerry Jennings) has yellow-ridged toucan, and a few scattered collections have normal channel-billed.
Kept by EFBG and DWA both, and bred by the latter.
    P. humboldti is kept by DWA, EFBG, and the Prospect Park Zoo.
This is currently kept by DWA and EFBG, and a few other North American collections. The nominate subspecies was imported by Jerry Jennings from Honduras, and has spread around a small amount.
It is also kept by EFBG.
In America, it is kept at DWA and the Milwaukee County Zoo.
Two subspecies are present in the US: nominate and flavirostris. The world’s first breeding of the latter took place at DWA in 2005.
There are at least 15 zoos with this species in the US, so it has certainly been established well.
Not common in the US, with only 3 holders. DWA’s birds are of subspecies atricollis.
EFBG and DWA both have the nominate subspecies.
First bred at DWA (the only current American holder) in 2009. I suspect this is a world first breeding but I’m not sure.
Three holders currently in the USA.
Only three American holders, and not in great numbers.
The only captive individuals of this species, anywhere, that I’m aware of are at EFBG. I don’t believe they’ve bred yet but it will happen soon.
    Kept at EFBG and DWA.
    This breeding occurred in 2008.
    4 US holders at present.
One male is currently kept by EFBG.

    This breeding occurred in 2008.
Actually not kept by DWA, but one is kept by Moody Gardens.
The subspecies kept by DWA is dimidiatus.
    EFBG has some of these.

@Vision and I are preparing a thread on toucans in captivity too, similar to his other threads, so I’m sure you’ll be interested to see that when we post it!

    Dallas World Aquarium bred Plate-billed mountain-toucans :

    The Mountain Toucan
    director | April 17, 2012
The Plate-billed mountain toucan (Andigena laminirostris) is a species found in the moist, montane forest on the west Andean slopes, in northwestern Ecuador and southwestern Colombia. These active, noisy birds have striking shades of blues, reds, browns, greens, yellows and other bright colors. Although the Toco may have the most recognizable and longest bill of all toucans, the four-inch bill of the Plate-billed is impressive and more colorful. On the upper mandible, a raised yellowish-buff, rectangular-shaped “plate” highlights the black and burgundy colors of the bill.

Here at the DWA, we have been really successful in breeding these incredible birds for the past two years. Toucans lay two to three eggs and the babies are cared for by the parents for 46 to 60 days. Both male and female share the responsibility of sitting on the eggs and feeding the babies, once they hatch. Toucans mainly eat fruits, but when caring for the young, they feed all kinds of small insects and worms to their babies.

Some of the parents do a really good job with the babies, but for others, we have to provide a little help. Last year, we had seven babies successfully raised by the nursery staff. For 2012, we already have four babies, one raised by us and three raised by their parents, and we are hopeful that our pairs keep breeding.

Being a restricted-range species, the Mountain toucan is being threatened by the loss of habitat, especially due to human activity. We are really proud of our Breeding Program and will keep helping the conservation of this and many other species.

Found also a note on the breeding of the Blue-banded toucanet at Dallas World Aquarium :

    Blue-Banded Toucanets
    director | June 23, 2013
One of the seven species of green toucanets of the genus Aulacorhynchus, the Blue-banded toucanet, (Aulacorhynchus coeruleicinctis) can be found in the subtropical and tropical moist forests of the east slopes of the Andes, from central and south Peru into Bolivia. They are a relatively small toucan species, with colorful, mainly green, plumage, white throat and a somewhat difficult to see blue band across the breast. They are typically seen in pairs or small groups, foraging in the top of the trees. Like other toucanets, they nest in tree cavities.

Here at the DWA we try to provide an environment for our birds that resembles, as close as possible, what they would find in nature. Our setup proves to be really effective for all the toucans participating in our Breeding Program, and they just love to spend time working on the nest logs that we provide for them. Once again, the breeding season started as a great success and we are especially happy when other species start to breed. We were glad to find the first clutch of eggs for our Blue-banded toucanet pairs in their nest cavities – another world-first breeding of a species. And it didn’t stop there! They have produced four clutches this year.

The first-time parents have a little help with their babies due to their inexperience, and the Nursery Staff couldn’t be happier to be able to work with this wonderful species. The babies are really cute and show themselves to be very gentle with the keepers and between each other.

Our Blue-banded toucanets are currently being kept in our Breeding Aviaries, but our babies are now getting ready to be displayed in one of our exhibits. Come check them out during the summer!
