They are at the zoo but off display for the construction of African Rocks- I fret they will not return as the Zoo has Buerger's Tree Kangaroos, which are a subspecies of Goodfellow's and those are being phased out. Regardless of the species, they won't be back on exhibit for a while.
Are they not to be exchanged with Europe where Goodfellow's are in an EEP managed breeding program? In return the SDZ should receive some Matschie's …..!!!!
I think that they may have already had both species. Obviously our focus is Mastchie's in the USA. I don't know of any plans to send them away. Betsy might, if she sees this. We are down to only zoos with the species (San Diego and Cleveland, if Cleveland still has them) and if they are managed in Europe, that's great.
I'm not sure if Cleveland has them anymore. I saw in a post a while back saying that the one in Cleveland passed away and a bird moved into its old exhibit. I'm not sure if they've received a new one since then, I haven't seen any updates since it passed away.
They wouldn't receive another Goodfellow's, it would be Mastchie's if they did. Thanks for the update. It's a shame we don't have much space for Tree Kangaroos, I wish we could have more than one species.
yep, the last Goodfellow's at Cleveland died in 2015 and the last one at San Antonio in 2014 (or 2013?). So just San Diego left.
San Antonio's died in 2014. Of course, nobody told whoever monitors their Facebook page, and since I missed the tree kangaroos on my first visit, I got super excited when a photo was captioned with "Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo". Then, after hunting down maybe three keepers I determined that it had died. Oh well.
All I have heard is at the link below. https://m.facebook.com/ClevelandMet...9715001.241506.54618365001/10156538922455002/
This is all part of the bigger picture with AZA investing in Matschie's and Europe staying with Goodfellow's. I am guessing the Koelner Zoo is on for a Goodfellow's from elsewhere. It would not be unthinkable if the second came from Europe too. Perhaps the breeding group at Beauval (??).
