Amazing news!!!!This is a magnificent achievement by the zoo.Good luck to Kufara.Who is the father? BennettL
TWPZ has just announced that 3 Cheetah cubs have been born to mother Kyan, she has the King Cheetah markings!
Wow.TWPZ should have announced it earlier the cubs are now 3 months old!!What a huge gap between their birth and their public announcement. BennettL
The cubs won't be on display until March. I'd say given they have had to hand raise a number of cubs recently they wanted to ensure everything was fine before announcing the births.
@Zorro , Do you know how much cheetahs have been born?Makes me think they could have lost a cub or something. BennettL
Found some info on recent cheetah births at Taronga Western Plains Zoo: Siri (F) Born 21/05/2015 Dam: Halla (2009), Sire: Kebeni (2009) Siri was a single cub Jelani (F) Born 11/10/2015 Dam: Kyan (2009), Sire: Jana (2012) Jelani was one of two cubs. The other (of unknown gender) died at birth Siri’s parents had another litter of four cubs born 04/09/2015. Three cubs were of unknown gender and died within two days of their birth; the fourth cub was a male that died 06/10/2015. Halla and Kyan are sisters, part of a litter of four born at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in 2009. In 2016, Taronga Western Plains Zoo had four male cheetah: Kebeni and Timka (brothers born 2009) and Hizi and Jana (brothers born 2012). The most likely father of the recent cubs is Jana as he previously bred with their mother Kyan. Cheetah females are notoriously selective in which male they mate with, so if a zoo finds a pair that are compatible, they usually stick with that pair. Last year, I did some research on the cheetah born in New Zealand Zoos. The mortality rate of cheetah cubs seems to be quite high (especially in the first few weeks), so I'd imagine TWPZ just wanted to be sure their recent litter survived before announcing it to the public. I found out on their Facebook page that they have a litter of three cubs and they are all strong and healthy and being mother-raised. BennettL
I visited TWPZ a few days ago. The place is a mess. Where's the bison, wapiti and simitar horned oryx gone? The old maned wolf exhibit has been closed for years and the large walk thru avairy is gone. Great place to go if you like blackbuck but. It really needs a massive clean up. Having said that the area that has been designated for the new lions exhibit is huge. It could do with a few signs explaining what will be included in the new exhibit and an artist impression of the finished product wouldn't hurt.
Mother cheetahs raising their cubs is unfortunately quite unusual in Australasian zoos it seems. The male cub has been named Obi, and the females Nyasa and Zahara. Zoo welcomes three Cheetah cubs
Any good tidings on any of the other rhinos at Dubbo? Do they still hold 5.5? (as in Males: Kwanzaa, Siabuwa, Ibala, Chikundo and Mpenzi and Females: Musina P., Kalungwezi, Dongajuma, Bhakita and said Kufara)?
Four lion cubs were born in November 2016 to Lazurus and Maya joining the three cubs born in 2015.They are currently off display and set to make their debut in Febuary. They are currently constructing Lion pridelands set to open in late this year:Zoo achieves breeding success with the birth of Lion cubs BennettL
Four male lion cubs go on public display Lion cubs make public debut "The cubs are on display with mother, Maya and father, Lazarus. They will soon be joined by sub-adult females Zuri and Makeba." "Three of the cubs have been named Karoo, Virunga and Sheru respectively, with names chosen by keepers and Taronga Foundation supporters, with a naming competition now underway giving members of the public the chance to propose a name for the fourth cub."
Quokka Joey Quokka joey (born mid 2016 to Mocha) has emerged from the pouch. It's gender is unknown but it has been named 'Yiray’ meaning sun in the Wiradjuri language. Quokka joey emerges
The four lion cubs have been introduced to their two older sisters: Lion cubs meet older siblings No news on whether they'll be introduced to their older brother. I'm guessing there's plans to transfer him to another zoo in the immediate future, therefore making an introduction with him unnecessary and not worth the risk.
