The rumour is the enclosure will be re-done for the Yellow-throated Martens, but I will state again that is a rumour and not fact!
Went today and the Scot WildCat housing has not changed much and no signs up, the net off the top (or roof) has gone. Only reasons i noticed no cats in there. Got a few photos etc i will put up in due time.
The orangs were outside with their new climbing frames today. They were very very active and did a lot of testing, climbing and even a bit of swinging!
A question adresses to the Twycross insiders? Who sired the bonobo youngsters WINTON and LOPORI? Thanks a lot...
They are nice, mainly telegraph pole style constructions and woven nets. Lots of movable parts, they were having to take care when moving. All four were all over them, upper and lower levels - kept them busy all day. Even kibriah who is very human orientated.
They're an improvement but far from a quantum leap (which would be unreasonable to expect really). I'm pleased they're doing everything they reasonably can but they're severely restricted by the "footprint" of the outside area. In summary, okay as an improvement but if a new enclosure was built like this today way it would be classed as poor/inadequate (the curse of many a zoo building of a similar age).
Yes, they are very limited in what they can do. But at least the novelty of the new equipment will be enriching in itself, for a while.
Twycross Zoo Facebook today "Twycross Zoo would like to thank everyone visiting us today for their patience; we are experiencing very high visitor numbers!! This is the best day we’ve had since 2007!!! All of our food outlets are open, and there's plenty of grass to sit down in the sunshine!! As a charity your support is invaluable to us, so thank you all!! "
I will post one i got yesterday, 05/05/2013 very poor picture though. Any questions while things still fresh in my head.
I have just across this planning application for a Notice to demolish buildings over a Five years. I am not sure if it has been posted before but some key things on there some gone. http://publicdocuments.hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk/AnitePublicDocs/00158638.pdf Monkey House. Bonobo's Aviary. Toilet Block (Ones next to the below) Pet's Corner (Old one) Bottom Chimps (Next to the above) Bottom Chimps (which has now changed in to the new amur leopard housing). Giraffe Housing. Of course plans change etc, such as Bottom chimps now amur leopard housing, Giraffe housing has the camels now, Pets corner when i was there the other day building work going on (just the old hatches for goats to get out were being bricked up).
There seemed to be something going on at the old pets corner building. The windows overlooking the back yard (where the goats used to be) had been bricked up, and there was building material in the yard. No idea what its for though.
Pleased to see Twycross had a good day yesterday and I hope they took a good few bob to continue the improvements. Hopefully they will have an even better day on Spring Bank Holiday Monday, as it was this day fifty years ago that Molly Badham and Natalie Evans opened the gates of this zoo for the first time with a collection of sixty animals, Jean Moreton and her puppets, Tinga and Tucker officially opened the zoo on this day.
Old pets corner Could it be possible/feasible that this building and adjacent yard could be converted at low cost into a small primate exhibit or bird aviary of some kind?
i think this is a new vet room paid for by Nottingham University, the old vet facility is shambolic, not fit for use as goes for the food prep area.........................
