I understand the moose and shark but you don’t use the wolf?

For whatever reason I'm not a fan of large canids other than Maned Wolf. I don't hate them but I don't really love them either. Maned Wolf I do particularly like for whatever reason. Now foxes I like, and that may partly be due to personal experiences with a couple species.

I agree partially. While I like all animals, some I feel are better then others from personal experience. Like, I love Sitatunga antelope because I once fed and petted one.

At least Zoo Tycoon 2 doesn't have as many unnecessary animals as the Xbox version.

I agree with everything you said but if i could have the chance of change everything in zoo tycoon 2, i would just replace emperor penguin with the king penguin and insted of adding the bongo to the base game i would add the crested gibbon and the orangutan would no longer being the only primate from asia.

I thought it may be interesting to see which animals of ZT2 I have seen myself.

I started playing Zoo Tycoon 2 again this week, and wanted to share my thoughts on this old thread. My main focus is on the species roster for Marine Mania, since in my opinion this is one of the species rosters that needs the most work (how does it include zero fish, besides sharks and rays?!).

First of all, I would remove the following 8 species from the game’s original animal roster:

    1. Great White Shark (Benthic)
    2. Goblin Shark (Benthic)
    3. Blue Marlin (Pelagic)
    4. Leatherback Sea Turtle (Pelagic)
    5. Narwhal (Tundra)
    6. False Killer Whale (Coastal)
    7. Short-Finned Pilot Whale (Pelagic)
    8. Rockhopper Penguin (Coastal)

Many of those species (the 2 shark species, marlin, narwhal, and leatherback sea turtle) would be replaced for the sake of realism, since those species are all generally not successful in captivity in real life. The false killer whale and short-finned pilot whale would be removed for the sake of taxonomic diversity, since the game does not need 6 different types of cetaceans.

Now, I will detail my plan for what to replace those 8 species with.

Four of the empty slots will be used for large fish species. In my opinion, the lack of non-shark fish is one of the major downfalls of Marine Mania, so I wanted to address that here. I primarily chose larger fish, since I wanted them to be relatively easily visible in large tanks in the game. Here is the roster:

    1. Bluefin Tuna (Pelagic)
    2. Great Barracuda (Pelagic)
    3. Goliath Grouper (Reef)
    4. Green Moray Eel (Reef)

With the addition of those 4 fish, there would still be space for 4 more animals to be added to the game. Here is what I would choose, and why:

    1. Harbor Seal (Coastal)- this is one of the most common pinnipeds in captivity (at least in the US), so it felt weird for it to be excluded.
    2. African Penguin (Coastal)- I would replace rockhopper penguins with this species, since they are more common in zoos.
    3. Giant Pacific Octopus (Benthic)- To add more taxonomic diversity to Marine Mania, I would introduce the game’s first cephalopod.
    4. Japanese Spider Crab (Benthic)- In a similar vein to the addition of the octopus, this species would add diversity by introducing the first crustacean to the game.

In all, here is the full list of species I would add to my version of Marine Mania, organized by taxonomy. The 8 species I have added are in red, and the original 12 species are in black:

    1. African Penguin (Coastal)
    2. Giant Pacific Octopus (Benthic)
    3. Japanese Spider Crab (Benthic)

    4. Beluga Whale (Tundra)
    5. Bottlenose Dolphin (Coastal)
    6. Orca (Tundra)
    7. California Sea Lion (Coastal)
    8. Harbor Seal (Coastal)
    9. Pacific Walrus (Tundra)
    10. Sea Otter (Coastal)
    11. West Indian Manatee (Coastal)
    12. Bluefin Tuna (Pelagic)
    13. Goliath Grouper (Reef)
    14. Great Barracuda (Pelagic)
    15. Green Moray Eel (Reef)

    16. Manta Ray (Reef)
    17. Green Sea Turtle (Coastal)
    18. Blacktip Reef Shark (Reef)
    19. Scalloped Hammerhead (Pelagic)
    20. Whale Shark (Benthic)

Overall, my new list includes 1 bird, 2 invertebrates, 8 marine mammals, 4 fishes, 1 ray, 1 reptile, and 3 sharks. There are 7 coastal species, 3 benthic species, 3 tundra species, 3 pelagic species, and 4 reef species.

So, that is the list I would go with. However, there were a few honorable mentions of animals I would have included if I could put more than 20 in the expansion pack:

    1. Tufted Puffin (Tundra)- I would have liked to include more seabirds in the expansion pack. If included, Puffins would be made flightless, since adding flying mechanics is too complex for the game. A pelican species, rather than puffins, was also considered as a bird possibility.
    2. Cow Nose Ray (Coastal)- These rays are incredibly common in aquariums, especially in touch tanks, so I would have liked to include them here.
    3. Spotted Eagle Ray (Reef)- This was another ray I would have liked to include, because of their beautiful patterns.
    4. Largetooth Sawfish (Coastal)- I almost included this species, but replaced it with the Japanese Spider Crab at the very last minute. Their unusual morphology makes them very attractive, and after removing Narwhals and Marlins from the game, it would have felt good to add a different sea creature with a long facial protuberance.
    5. Sand Tiger Shark (Coastal)- This is another species I would have liked to include because of how common it is in large aquariums. Nurse sharks were another possibility for another coastal shark species as well.
    6. Zebra Shark (Reef)- This is another shark species common in captivity, and their spotted patterns would make them an attractive exhibit animal.
    7. Pacific White Sided Dolphin (Pelagic)- If I were to include a fourth cetacean species, this would be it. The cool patterns on these dolphins make them more interesting to me than other cetaceans like pilot whales or false killer whales, for instance. Unfortunately there just wasn’t enough space for another cetacean on the list.
    8. Ocean Sunfish (Pelagic)- This was another species that I cut from the list at the last minute. They are a very cool species due to their unusual morphology, but I felt the other fish I added were more valuable inclusions.
