I was wondering if anyone could help.
I am looking for a complete list of all species held in US collections from insects through to mammals.
In Europe we have Zootierliste that gives a very good listing of all species is there anything for the US.

The best way to find one would be to make one yourself. If you do, let us know. We would all use it. :)

Seriously, good luck. A lot of AZA websites only mention the most popular animals, some don't mention any at all. Some don't update. And the couple I've privately contacted were no help.

I think @snowleopard would be very helpful in this quest as he traveled to a majority of the zoos In the US. I'll try to help as well as I keep picture records of the animals to help me remember what was at that zoo. Besides that I wish you good luck!

That’s a real shame. I’m planning to do some digging soon in advance of planning some trips for next year, so maybe I will need to rethink my strategy now knowing this! Having a confirmed list really would be exceptionally helpful.

Yes this was a major problem I had when I was planning my trip to San Diego. I looked on the website and there was maybe 20-30 species, almost all mammals! Luckily the zoo map is excellent so I got a good sense of all the animals and knew which areas to prioritize on my visit.

This about sums it up. There are approximately 600 'zoos' and 155 aquariums in the USA and so having extensive species lists is an enormous task. There are many zoos that don't even have the same species that they had a decade ago as the animals on display are constantly changing and I feel that the job to consistently update all 750 zoos in America is far beyond the capability of ZooChat members.

I know it's going to take time but we have to start somewhere and like zootierliste it will grow with the help of members on here.

Birdsandbats that would help if people who visited there local zoos would update lists on here or they could pm me and I will add them to the data base.

A good place to start might be some of my 'Snowleopard Road Trip' threads because on the 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017 trips there will be some extensive, detailed lists of species. On the 2015 thread I listed all of the on-show species in the Reptile Houses in Fort Worth, Dallas, Houston, Animal World & Snake Farm Zoo, etc.

Would like us to post our local Zoo’s Collections on this thread?

Between Palmer and Seward we have the following facilities that display animals for the public:

The Musk Ox Farm (Musk Ox)
The Reindeer Farm (Reindeer, Elk, Bison)
    The Alaska Zoo
The Imagenarium at the Anchorage Museum (Turtles and Alligators)
    The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center
    The Alaska Sealife Center

I can get you a list of on-show species at each. The Zoo and the AWCC have a few species off-show as well.

It’s not until August, but the Alaska State Fair usually exhibits animals as well.

@Moebelle has some pretty helpful and extensive zoo lists for zoos primarily in the Midwest.

I would be very grateful if those that have a list of a collection would please put a link on here or those that have information on web pages with species list please put on here so as I can gather more information to help everyone with a web page with a complete list of species kept within the US.
