As I attempt to list every species in a Cali zoo, I found the species list for Santa Ana here. http://www.santaanazoo.org/collection.pdf Unsure about the domestic species though as they could be any breed, I'm still finishing up lists for Fresno and Sacramento but I really REALLY need help with the zoos in south besides LA as I haven't visited the zoos in a while. If anyone can help with that then I could finish the Californian zoos and aquariums and PM the lists.
I have the following complete lists – Akron zoo, Milwaukee zoo, Santa ana zoo i know this is not many but still early days and I am sure in the near future I will have many more collections completed lists The following collections are awaiting Scientific name listings – Cleveland zoo, Birmingham zoo, Cincinnati zoo, Denver zoo, Heritage park zoological sanctuary, Los Angeles zoo, Louisville zoo, Montgomery zoo, National aviary Pittsburgh, Newport aquarium, Pittsburgh zoo, San Diego zoo, Columbus zoo, There are many collections where I have part lists and have sent e-mails to 15 other collections awaiting replies from all. I know this is going to be a long and some time frustrating job but in the end I think everyone will benefit from a good source of information which everyone who takes part will be proud of. Still need as much information as possible so if or when you go to a collection please try and make a list of all species on display or even take pictures of the signage of all species on display as this will all be great information to work on Thank you to all that have helped so far.
Will the user of your list be able to find not just what species are at a zoo, but also find what zoos hold a specific species. For example: if I go to the San Diego zoo list, I would see that they have western lowland gorillas, but will there be another list for specifically western lowland gorillas, listing every zoo that they're at. So San Diego, la, etc.
Yes I hope to model the web site on the current one used on zootierliste for European collections we also hope to provide a map of the collection so people will have an idea as to where in the collections the species are located.
A few questions: Is this just for AZA zoos? Will all animals be counted at species level? Will you keep track of separate breeds for domestic animals? Also, for those lists you might want to check the zoo news threads since the lists were made to see if the zoo has added or taken away any species.
No hopefully ALL US collections and we are keeping an eye on as many news threads as we can for species leaving and arriving.
Who's we? Not wanting to sound defeatist but I don't think your current methodology is up to such a gargantuan task. The obvious way of doing it (as you seem to be implying) would be to follow the Zootierliste model (i.e. build a framework so that others (and yourself) can then populate it). But even if you're such a software wizard then the geography and size of the US would most likely defeat your ambitions -there are vast swathes of zoos which are rarely if ever visited by zoo-nerds willing to diligently write down species lists and upload them. If collections isolated and distant by UK standards (i.e. not very isolated or distant) can be significantly out of date and incorrect you've as much chance of getting an accurate overview of all US collections as London has of going back into Elephants. You'd be better off trying to snowball a petition to open ZIMS up to the public.
There are 6 of us trying to work together to get this off the ground one with a very good knowledge of computers and software usage the rest of us gather information and put it on to a external hard drive just for this work that helps to keep it all in one place with easy access for all. As it stands we are feeling very positive about the challenge a head as one person as said to us starting the challenge will be the hardest and once all the information as been added to the web site then after it gets a little easier so here's hoping
