Two Bongo calves were born right after Christmas to mothers Juni and Jesi. Juni’s was born naturally while Jesi’s was born via C-section. Juni’s calf was a male, and named Johnny whilst Jesi’s calf was a female and named Charlie. Christmas Brings Two Bongo Babies - Virginia Zoo in Norfolk
Are they already on exhibit? I decided to hold off on doing the trio of places there until it's warmer, but maybe I should go there next week instead of Lehigh.
Both amazing zoos. Lehigh is a mostly outdoor zoo, so VA Zoo would be better now, but I don't think the world of reptiles expansion has opened yet.
Ummm.....I don't know how you missed this, living in Virginia and all, but it opened in June 2018....
Where can I find news on this? If you are talking about the already built exhibits that aren't (?) filled yet, than I think that they are technically still open...
It might be on the website. I know what you are talking about with exhibits. If you look back at the VA Zoo 2017 and 18 pages you might find info. This is at the end of building by the indoor monkey and sloth exhibits. I think Orinoco crocodiles may have been mentioned.
Orinoco Crocs were the original intended species for the crocodile exhibit, though plans changed to exhibit Siamese. A worker told me back in August that the bird aviaries was the part of the two netted exhibits next to the Beastro.
Ok thanks. If you're ever in Norfolk, you will see the signs about the upcoming exhibit. It was supposed to have open around November/December.
According to the website, whatever part it is that has Siamese crocs, etc is now open. Might have to change from lehigh to the norfolk area for wednesday, then! Looks like they have quite a few reptile species I didn't see last year.
Virginia Zoo's kangaroo, Marley, has passed away :-( The sakis are named Jackie and Lionel and the titi monkeys are named Paris and Ziggy. There is a new crocodile named Makara. The prairie dogs were relocated to their old exhibit in North America.
Jesi, the bongo that gave birth via C-section, has died of complications from the birth. Virginia Zoo bongo mother dies after giving birth via C-section
Are you going Wednesday as in tomorrow or next week? if it's this Wednesday, looks like it will be a high of 50 which should allow most of the animals outside. Also, you could see the zoo's two red panda cubs on exhibit. Virginia Zoo would be my vote!
It was going to be tomorrow, but my best friend's funeral is tomorrow so the zoo trip is being rescheduled
Male cheetahs Chester and Rico are moving to Wildlife Safari for breeding soon. Two females from Fossil Rim will take their place. Cheetahs leaving Virginia Zoo in search of mates
