I am hoping to visit Prague and Pilsen in two weeks time and was hoping for some tips or info for visiting this time of year. Are a lot of species off show due to the weather? What new things should I look out for? And in Pilsen are the striped faced fruit bats on show? :)

As I'm sure you know, the off-show areas at Pilsen contain an enormous number of interesting species. Fortunately, the staff at the zoo are exceptionally friendly, and are very glad to show these areas to interested visitors.

I visited both zoos in late Jan and early Feb 2012, and most species were on show. Plzen's hoofstock is largely visible from indoor viewing, and so are most of its birds, in fact I'm not sure much was off-display although certainly some would have been. Prague was similarly mostly on display, with the exception being waterfowl. Both zoos have a number of indoor houses that are nice and warm for winter viewing, and plenty of hardy species that can be outside year-round.
