It has been six months since the global captive walrus population was updated and an overview of recent developments was published so the following post will publicize the current census and the latest news.

On February 7, 2020, 0.1 Ninotchka, 0.1 Petrushka, and 0.1 Tanya, the walruses from Oceanogràfic Valencia, were introduced to 1.0 Odin, Tierpark Hagenbeck’s breeding bull. Mating between Odin and the cows has already been observed. If Ninotchka, Petrushka, and Tanya conceive, they will be expecting during the 2021 calving season.

Based on the Walrus Network Database, 8 year old 0.1 Klava and 0.1 Yeva passed away in 2019 at the Moskvarium. However, the Moskvarium website states Klava, Yeva, and Lora are still inhabitants of the facility. Until further information is released, confirming or denying Klava and Yeva’s passing, both individuals will be included in the updated census.

Shenzhen Xiaomeisha Sea World closed to the public on December 10, 2019. As of the facility’s closure, the status of 9 year old 1.0 Wangzi, the walrus which resided at Shenzhen Xiaomeisha Sea World, is unknown. Therefore, this individual will be excluded from the updated census.

I hadn't realised Paira Daiza is getting a male(Thor) from Hamburg as well as the three females. Not sure how long bulls take to mature- he is currently 6 years- but its good hope for future success at Paira Daiza perhaps.

 

Surprisingly, the news of Thor's impending transfer to Pairi Daiza with Ninotchka, Petrushka, and Tanya has been minimally publicized. Only four sources, two primary and two secondary, have mentioned the move, with one primary and one secondary hinting at a bull joining the group from Oceanogràfic Valencia.

Bull walruses reach maturity between the ages of 8 and 10 but usually don't mate until the age of 15. In captivity, both female and male walruses have reproduced at an earlier age than their wild counterparts so Thor could breed in the next two to four years, at the earliest. Great for the reproduction of the species in Europe.

You single-handedly keep our two elephant populations up-to-date, which is no easy task given the privacy of AZA studbooks, and now not even foreign languages prevent you from getting all the news there is to have. This news is almost enough to give me hope.

 

@AmbikaFan, Thank you for your kind words and praise but the true credit and recognition should be given to @Walrus Network. They've done all the strenuous and time-consuming research to compile the global captive walrus population. I've only relayed the information obtained by Walrus Network on ZooChat. I would highly recommend looking through the official website: Walrus Network. The database is well-formatted, very organized, and full of fascinating information on the captive walruses of the past and present.

 

Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I do follow walruses and even took a return trip to God-awful Marineland just to see Smooshi again. It was worth it.

 

The 'breeding loan agreement' actually says PD will receive additional Walruses, from as yet unidentified sources, including a bull. So possibly four may not be the final total for them. I think this breeding attempt with the Valencia females temporarily at Hamburg is quite revolutionary really, and hope it might pay off. There have been copulations already with Odin though it doesn't say how many of the three cows have been mated.

 

You're right. Additional walruses are expected to join the group from Oceanogràfic Valencia, but given the current captive population of walruses in Europe, there are few individuals who could move to Pairi Daiza with them.

1.0 Odin, 0.1 Dyna, 0.1 Polosa, and 1.0 Fiete will very likely remain at Tierpark Hagenbeck as the bull and two cows are a breeding huddle and the calf is barely a year old yet. 0.1 Raisa is a potential candidate as she's of breeding age and unrelated to 1.0 Thor. 1.0 Nikolai, 0.1 Olga, and 0.1 Olivia will most likely remain at Dolfinarium Harderwijk as the bull has yet to reproduce (and his fertility is questionable), the older cow hasn't had offspring in the past 17 years, and the younger cow is the half-sister of 1.0 Thor. 0.1 Rossita is another potential candidate as she's of breeding age, has reproduced, and is unrelated to 1.0 Thor. Ultimately, Rossita and Raisa appear to be the only walruses in Europe who could move to Pairi Daiza with Petrushka, Ninotchka, Tanya, and Thor.

I hope so too! It's exciting to see three institutions from three different countries come together to enhance the captive reproduction of walruses in Europe!

Translation:

Even though it's doesn't specify which cows, in particular, Odin bred with, I believe he successfully mated with at least Petrushka and Ninotchka. Only time will tell whether or not the cows conceived.

 

I agree, on paper these seem the only two cows they could add to the upcoming Paira Daiza group without disrupting the other groups. I wonder how willing either place is to let one go...it might depend on available space at each institution perhaps?

Re the matings, they are a bit 'coy' about saying exactly what's happened so far, lets hope this works for one or more of them though and some pregnancies result. Presumably they must leave Hamburg in the next couple of weeks to give time to settle in at PD for the re-opening on 21st March- if they want them already there by then.

The loss of Izumi's calf is a major blow to the captive reproduction of walruses in Japan as the pregnancy was the first to be conceived following the 2018 regional breeding program initiative to develop a sustainable population of walruses through collaborative breeding loans.

Ocean Park in Hong Kong also had a walrus exhibit - I think two specimens? I remember one having tusks, iirc.

 

You’re correct. Hong Kong Ocean Park has two walruses: 16 year old 1.0 Rokku and 20 year old 0.1 Miru. Both individuals have tusks with Miru having long thin tusks and Rokku having short thick tusks.

Currently, there are 24 (5.19.0) walruses residing at nine institutions in Japan.

Unfortunately, off the top of my head, I don’t know the exact number of walruses currently held in captivity throughout the world however, an updated census of the global captive walrus population was recently posted to the thread (Post #281).

 

The first two walrus, Thor and Petrushkha, have moved from Hamburg to Pairi Daiza.

The Facebook post linked below however contains the name Petruska and says that she came from Valencia rather than Hamburg.

Based on the following video, the pup born in March 2020 to 0.1 Mina and 1.0 Takku (deceased) at Kamogawa Sea World appears to be quite healthy and active. Hopefully, the gender and name of the calf, in addition to the exact date of birth, will be announced in the coming months.

Is there any news on whether the other two Walruses have arrived from Hamburg to Paira Daiza? No mention on their FB so maybe not yet.

 

Unfortunately not. To my knowledge, Ninotchka and Tanya have yet to be transferred from Tierpark Hagenbeck to Pairi Daiza. The two of them were supposed to be transferred shortly after Thor and Petrushka were but the transfer was most likely postponed due to COVID-19 border closures and restrictions.

 

Thankyou. I feared that might be the case. Paira Daiza has now re-opened- with limitations and a one way system in place. Perhaps we will see the other two female Walrus arrive in due course hopefully.
