I wonder whether they were aware when naming this walrus that balzak is the Dutch word for scrotum....

I just had a quick google to see if I could find why he was named Balzak. All I got was that he was named by a member of the public in a competition.

I wonder if he was named after Honore de Balzak though (a French author, given that it is French Canada).

Thanks, I use autotranslate on their twitter so I misunderstood one of the females as a pup when they probably just call their animals with the suffix -chan.

There are at least seven or eight collections in Japan with Walrus:
    動物園と水族館

And I'd be immensely surprised if there is only one in China with them.

There are actually quite few Chinese zoos aquaria with walrus but I expected them to be more common consiering how much more common polar bears seem to be in zoos

Polar Bears are relatively easy to keep, apart from behavioural issues. Walruses historically have had a lot of health issues, possibly largely addressed by now. However, there are none in the UK. I've never seen one.

In a captive environment, walruses have been known to be difficult to breed due to the fact that most pregnancies have resulted in stillbirth or that the calf doesn't survive past infancy.

In all, 24 walruses have been born in North America from 1971 to 2017 based on the following sources:

    https://digital.lib.washington.edu/.../Triggs_washington_0250O_12679.pdf?sequence=1
    Pg 54 and 238
Nutritional and behavioral aspects of reproduction in walruses
    Pg 10, 12, and 24

Walrus gives birth at Quebec City aquarium, a Canadian first
Second walrus pup born at the Quebec City aquarium

Of those 24 calves born in North America, 9 were stillborn, 7 died young, 3 survived to adulthood but have since died, and 5 are currently alive.

While in Europe, 8 walrus calves have been born from 1995 to 2015 based on the following sources:

    http://krant.telegraaf.nl/nieuwslink/teksten/nws.dolfinarium.walrus.moeder.html

    http://www.vancouversun.com/wild+monday/11453566/story.html

Of those 8 calves born in Europe, 1 was stillborn, 2 died young, 4 are currently alive, and 1 has unknown status.

Does anyone know what happened to 1.0 Boika? This is the European captive-born walrus with unknown status. I am unable to find any sources that state his death or transfer.

In addition, does anyone have information on the mother and father of 0.1 Takena? I have my speculations but can not find any primary sources.

Why does Valencia not feature on this thread?
