Welcome to the new ZooChat website!

ZooChat is a community for zoo and animal conservation enthusiasts.

We aim to provide a supportive and safe environment for people to share their passion for zoos and wildlife and as such, we have a strict set of rules for how we expect members to behave, which can be summarised into two basic principals:
    1. add value to the community
    2. be nice to each other
Please refer to the forum rules for more details about what we expect from our members.

We encourage people from all backgrounds and nationalities to join in our community and contribute. Even if you don't feel you have any answers yourself, but just ask questions - that still adds significant value to the discussion because someone else will always be wanting to ask those same questions at some point, so don't be scared to ask!

Membership of ZooChat is free - everyone is welcome to join and become part of the community. We do have an age restriction in that we only permit people 13 years and older to join and post on the forums.

We encourage new members to join and post something about themselves in our Introductions Forum.

For our existing members - all user accounts, posts, threads and photos have been migrated across from our old site. You should find the content familiar, even though we have completely new software.

There are a heap of new features available in this new software (for example - check it out on a mobile phone or tablet, it works really well on devices of all screen sizes!), so it will take a little while to get used to everything.

If there's something you're not sure about or can't work out how to do - just ask!

We're still fixing up a few last things on the site, so there may be a few more changes - but most of the work is done.

If you have any questions about how to use this website or suggestions on how we might improve it, please post your questions in the Help & Feedback discussion area.

You can always contact [email protected] if you have difficulty accessing your account.

EDIT: It's 8 years since we last relauched the site: Welcome to ZooChat! ... and 13 years since the site started: Welcome !

I also want to say a big thank you to Sim, the new site looks great; a huge improvement from the older version, and just overall a much better experience using and navigating it. :)

I want to join in thanking you for all your hard work. The new site is great, easier to use, and has a very small and simple learning curve.

Love the new site, great to have it work on mobile devices! :)

I must say, I'm not 100% sure about the new smilies. I still need to get used to them.

Interesting to see the descriptions under user name, which I think are based on number of posts. I see here "well-known member" (most responders so far) and at least one "active member" which I assume is the next step down. I wonder what the people with only a few posts will be listed as? Maybe just "member?" Also new banners - I am no longer a supporter, I am now a premium member!

It's a very simple user title ladder based on post count.

I've not modified it from the defaults, it goes from New Member to Member at 5 posts, then Active Member at 25 posts and Well-Known Member at 45 posts.

    Not very meaningful, I know.

Will look at changing it one day. We can have it based on more sophisticated measures than just post counts - but I'd need to spend some time thinking through how we might want to do it and what we might want to call the various levels.

Ok here is a change when uploading photos that everyone should know about. The title appears at the top as always. However, when I added a description I expected it to appear in the reply section as before. Instead, it appears as a subtitle under the main title. So be sure to post the photo first, then enter a description as a reply to the photo (in other words as the first comment).
