    Brindabella (F) B 1990
    Tulip (F) B 2003
    Lotus (F) B 2008
    Pansy (F) B 2013

They are all offspring of Harry. Tulip and Lotus are the daughters of Primrose, and Pansy is the daughter of Brindabella.

@Tafin, the females at Werribee are kept in mother/daughter groups of Primrose, Tulip and Lotus; and Brindabella and Pansy. There has been animosity between Primrose and Brindabella in the past; and they were separated for the safety of their respective calves during infancy. On one occasion, Harry and Primrose gained access to Brindabella and her 15 month old calf, and killed it.

@Zoofan15 is correct. Primrose, Tulip and Lotus are exhibited along the Walking trail, whilst Brindabella and Pansy are viewable on the Safari Bus.

The baby is a female, and has been named Taami (“musician” in Raramuri, an indigenous language originating from Chihuahuain Mexico, where a population of American Bison reside).

She was born Jan 27 to parents, Benji (their resident male breeder) and Tehya.

They have 3.4 Southern white rhinoceros:

    Herd One:

1.0 Leeroy - born 1980 at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo
0.1 Make - born 1984 (approx) at Kruger National Park

    Herd Two:

1.0 Umgana - born 1988 (approx) at Kruger National Park
0.1 Letaba - born 1992 (approx) at Kruger National Park
0.1 Sisi - born 1996 (approx) at Kruger National Park

    Herd Three:

1.0 Kifaru - born 2009 at Hamilton Zoo
0.1 Kipenzi - born 2013 at Werribee Open Range Zoo

    Additional notes/info:

Make is the mother of Sisi; Sisi is the mother of Kipenzi. Sisi has given birth to five calves. The first three died; and the other two were removed for hand rearing. One was Kipenzi; the other was born in December 2014 and died later that month of a bacterial infection.

Letaba gave birth to a male calf named Ganini in 2002. He was the first Southern white rhinoceros born at Werribee; and has since moved to Australia Zoo, where he has sired five calves.

The current breeding pair at Werribee are Kifaru and Kipenzi. Kifaru’s father is one of the most successful breeding bulls in the region, siring seven calves to three cows. Kifaru’s mother has only bred twice, but her daughter is due to give birth to her first calf next month.

Thanks for that. Did Make and Letaba have any other calves?

Make hasn’t given birth since arriving from Kruger National Park in 1999. Her daughter Sisi has been reproducing since 2002, so it’s possible she was subject to estrous suppression from her daughter (though usually the reverse is seen).

Letaba has given birth to one other calf. She had a son named Tawali (born 25/11/2004). He was sent to Australia Zoo 01/04/2008, where he died 21/02/2009.

Werribee have said they are open to the possibility of introducing Kifaru to Letaba and Sisi for breeding; though the current focus is on breeding Kifaru with Kipenzi.

The current focus is on breeding Kifaru and Kipenzi. Though, there is still hope in the meantime that Umgana will breed with Sisi and Letaba.

Letaba is represented quite well through her son, Ganini (DJ) at Australia Zoo, who has 6 children, with one of his daughters breeding at Monarto Zoo. Whilst Sisi, is only represented through her daughter (Kipenzi).

I guess it would be worthwhile using hormonal treatment and getting the bull in with the older females. It does - somehow - not make sense not to ..... (and have done so previously given that one wild born female has so little representation anyhow).

I would of thought Werribee would of wanted a couple of new females from the up coming rhino import from South Africa via New Zealand

Since Southern white rhinoceros are similar to elephants in that delays in breeding (or long intervals without breeding) impair fertility, I’d be doubtful of Letaba producing another calf 16 years after her last calf was born.

They may have more luck with Sisi, who last gave birth five years ago, and who has produced five calves over the years.

If we regard Sisi as a founder - as she is wildborn and her mother (who has produced no calves) is negligible to the captive population; she is far more valuable than her daughter, Kipenzi (a half sibling to Ganini and his offspring). However in practice, Sisi has difficulty nursing offspring and the investment of staff’s time and resources are high. If Kipenzi can naturally rear offspring, this is the most straightforward way to continue this line.

I am lost for words. :( She was one beautiful lioness, and i’m sure she will be missed by many.

Only this morning I watched the WORZ Lion cam, and there were the keepers, doing their duties as usual with the other lions. It must be heartbreaking for her keepers, who loved her dearly. :(:(:(

May she rest peacefully in heaven.

    RIP Jarrah 31/12/2000-06/05/2020

Werribee Open Range Zoo have posted two virtual tours on their Facebook page.

Some news that came out of them:

They have imported a male Nyala, who is taking over from Alberto as the breeding male. He has been introduced to Thandi, Zuri and their daughters.

They have a new male Scimitar-horned oryx, who has been introduced to the females for breeding.
